If its really got less than 100,000 miles I'd guess the thermostat is stuck open and its all carboned up. I'd offer him $800, haul it home, diesel purge and run a tank or two through it on the highway in 4th. Mine smoked some when I first got it. I did the above and now it hardly smokes at all. -Curt Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2007 19:39:37 -0700 From: Robert Rentfro [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [MBZ] CL 190D 5speed in AZ To: Mercedes Discussion List Mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii What do you reckon is wrong with this? http://phoenix.craigslist.org/car/400626863.html Bob R - Building a website is a piece of cake. Re: [MBZ] CL 190D 5speed in AZ
That is my feeling too, if as described it all of a sudden started blowing blue/black smoke, which means one or more cylinders is not firing properly (black smoke) and oil is getting into a combustion chamber (blue smoke). If it was valve stem seals or cylinder rings it is usually a gradual process. However replacing a head gasket is no biggy (especially on a non turbo engine) and any good DIYer should be able to do it, or take it to a good indy. Also while the head is off you can inspect the piston bores to judge their condition, given the mileage they should be perfect. Once that is fixed you have a nice cheap to run car, which with a manual should be good to drive. Black smoke is no problem for a Diesel, when it is blue or white then. I guess Dr Diesel will have more of a clue than me but blue smoke means the engine is burning oil, do a google for blue black smoke diesel and take it from there. It may be just valve stems or piston rings/glazing. Wish I could find a Diesel 5 speed that cheap, wish I could find a MB Diesel that cheap period.
