Yes. Thanks. I was thinking of that approach this afternoon. At least it will
minimize chance of combustion

Put a metal baffle between the exhaust and the leak -- oil is cheap, fixing
leaks isn't.

[MBZ] CL600ing

2023-03-24 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
The CL600 seemed to be down on power last time I drove it a coupla weeks ago. A
scan showed that the new cam position sensor was not sensing. Ugh. Bah. I
also saw that the right bank upstream lambda (O2) sensors were not sensing,
showing 0V for the two (zylinders 1-3 and 4-6) sensors upstream of the first
cattle analytic converters. Bah more.

I twiddled with the wires for the 3 sensors, they all ran to the back of the
engine and under the throttle body then up into the wiring loom thence to the
ECU. Nothing appeared to be pinched of broken best I could feel but couldn’t
really touch it all. I pulled off the big connector to the ECU and sprayed
cleaner on it all but nothing looked bad.

Dan’s work on his CL600 inspired me to pull out the cabin air filters which are
behind the glove box. The car smells like rodent piss so I thought maybe it was
coming from there. There was a huge amount of leaves in there and the filters
looked original. I vacuumed out all that stuff and ordered some new filters off
Amazon that were not too expensive so I got a pair for the CL500 too. Be here
tomorrow. I’ll need to do a good carpet cleaning etc to get that smell out.

Yesterday after messing with the car on and off I scanned it again and lo no
faults! No idea what I might have done, or not, but I’ll take it. So I decided
to take it out for a test run this evening. It ran great! I put the scanner on
it and watched real-time data. All the sensors were working fine. No misfires,
no stumbles. That was very gratifying!

I hooned on it a bit but didn’t want to get too vigorous on the 14yo tires. It
is quite entertaining. Very entertaining. I suppose the newer cars with more
powerful engines are faster but for a 22yo supercar 96% depreciated I’ll call
it good.

There is definitely an oil leak on the back of the engine, dripping on the
exhaust manifold so getting lots of smoke. I’m thinking that’s the oil cooler
(known issue, and huge job). Sigh. Probably shouldn’t drive it much as I
don’t want a fire. Bah.

But anyway it seems to be running OK which was the main concern. I’m happy
about that. The trunk raiser/lowerer is a little hydraulic unit that doesn’t
seem to be working. Will have to work on that. Some other issues but nothing
too big besides the oil cooler.

[MBZ] CL600ing

2023-03-04 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Took out the CL600 for its first real drive after the cam position sensor
replacements. Went to a Cars & Caffeine for a bit (a coupla Porches and Beetles
for krautkars and some LBCs, mostly old Merkin iron and hot rods) then some
errands, did about 40mi in all. Car ran great. There were some speed cops out
so I refrained from significant throttle actuations (mostly).

It is fast and pulls like a turbine. Totally smooth power and torque and speed
just builds, no drama. I love this car. I highly recommend the V12 experience.

It needs new tires before I can fully experience it.
