Try a product called Soft Scrub... should find it where you buy dishwashing soap and such things.. apply with a green scrub pad / sponge like you wash dishes with by hand. It will not scratch your windshield but will remove things like tree sap, city crud [don't know what else to call it] salt residue, and general junk that accumulates on windows, crome and such... I use it to polish badly tarnished silver even. Makes it shine like new. It is washes right off with water. I would use a pail of warm water to pre-wet the windshield and wet the sponge.. apply to sponge or windshield and scrub... Let us know how that worked, if you try it on your problem. Grant... AZ... Martha will step in here: Autoglym is good stuff, but if you can find it, there used to be a product called Nothin's Better or something like that sold specifically for hand polishing windshields. Jay O'Brien from the MBCA list turned me on to this stuff when I was visiting his ranch in CA some years back, and he gave me a small container of it. Similar to Bon Ami, it's a fine grit polishing compound that will remove very fine scratches in the glass and can be used by hand, not a buffer. Not sure how easy it is to find or if it's a regional product, but it works quite well. [MBZ] Cleaning windows
My problem with cleaning windows has not been the outside, which you can experiment on with plenty of room, but with the inside, which is concave and at an angle that does not lend itself well to a squeegee. Then the hard part - that lower area where you have difficulty maneuvering because the angle of the dash with the winshield prevents easy movements, and can only be tackled by getting into a contorted position. Add to that the problem of introducing a liquid in that region. (I imagine there is a more elegant way of expressing this difficulty). I have never managed to properly clean the inside of the windshield on a modern car. There are always streaks leftover. I've been told that film on the inside is plasticizer, a kind of off-gas from all the plastic components inside the vehicle. Also been told it is the source of the new car smell. I once asked a professional detailer how he does it. His only response was that he understood what I was saying and that he faced the same difficulty. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has conquered this problem.
