[MBZ] Confused/Challenged again

2008-04-19 Thread Dave H...
Ok gang here is today's challenges.

92 300TE 4Matic. Rear passenger window just decided it would not go up (NEVER
Been any type of challenge previously) Upon arriving home I went to the rear
door window switch and could hear the motor running but no window movement.
Then I heard a loud noise (almost like glass breaking). Friday I decided OK
lets find out what going on. How does one remove the interior door panel on
this vehicle? I stopped when it appeared as though the door panel was preparing
to break.

85 300SD. In terrible need of a new center console, have not been able to find
one. Also the rear ventilation (coming form the center console area has never
worked since I owned this vehicle) I decided to remove this console and see
what if anything I could do to temporarily rebuild this unit until I could find
its replacement. I have removed every screw I can find yet still near the top,
where it meets the dash, it is clinging to something. I know there are two
screws at the top of this unit where it meets the dash but these have been
removed. Does anyone know what could be holding it or the appropriate
procedure to remove a center console from this vehicle? Any suggestions on
where I should start determining why this rear center console vent is not
working?

My manuals are useless for answering these challenges (or maybe it is the
reader of these manuals). LOL

are holding the console in..I think.been a long time.

To remove the door panel, unscrew the lock button, pull the trim and
window switch out (the black plastic just pries out), remove the
plastic trim around the door latch. Push the plastic bucket for
the door latch forward to unhook it (I think, may be back, it's
obvious), then pry the link out of the latch and remove. Remove the
ashtray and plastic backing (pry out at the top and down), the LIFT
THE DOOR PANEL STRAIGHT UP along the door. It's hooked to the door
with about six plastic hooks. If you pry it sideways, you will snap
the hooks off and will have to replace the door panel.

Goes back in just the opposite: slide down to engage the hooks, put
the ashtray in, etc. Easiest door panel I've ever seen, and the most
secure so long as the hooks don't get broken by someone attempting to
pry it off.

And be sure to put the plastic moisture barrier back
where it was, and if it's shredded or missing, get
some underlayment plastic from Home Despot or Lowe's
and cut out a new one - never, ever, leave this out!

Any suggestions on where I should start determining why this rear
center console vent is not working?

You're on the right track. The vent knob at the back pulls
on a Bowden cable that runs forwards to the actual flap
that's under the dash. (The air is ducted back.) There's
a joint in the middle of this cable, too, somewhere about
the area of the shifter. Plenty of things to go wrong,
all hard to get to! When you get that far, be gentle with
the duct. It's snapped into place with long plastic latching
fingers. When you _do_ get it all back together working
again, make sure the knob can _fully_ shut off the vent
before you button it all up. Like the center vents, it
can only blow cold air, and even a little leak in mid-winter
is quite unpleasant. Ours leaks, but not badly enough to
undergo the operation. We just drape a towel over it.

Hear, hear! (I can't count the number of these I've
had to replace. Far more than I've found still there
to be sure. And a lot of soft mushy door panels as
a result, too.)
