Tires are supposed to have a manufacturing date code on the sidewall.
I've googled it, but never been sure I'm looking at the right numbers,
I also don't know when this requirement began so older tires might not
have the code.

I kept a 1968 Chevy pickup around as a 3rd vehicle for many years. I
bought it in about 1982 or 3 and when I got it the tires were awful.
When I drove it home, I wondered if I had made a big mistake in buying
it. I bid on it and got it for about $750 but was not able to start it
or drive it before bidding. In any event, I put 5 new radial tires on it
and it then drove fine. I got Uniroyal blems for a discount price with
part of the name scrubbed off with a grinder so they were "Uni"s. Those
tires were on the truck for pretty close to 20 years. They only ever got
something like 15K miles on them if my memory is reasonably accurate,
but over time they dried out and cracked so badly that you could see the
steel belts in the grooves on the tires. Notwithstanding that, I hauled
yards of gravel and about 2,000# of patio blocks home near the end of
time with those tires. I only made short trips with them at low speeds
when they were really old but I never had any flats or blowouts with
them despite heavy loads and obviously aged out tires. I finally put 5
new Goodyear radials on the truck and joked with the shop that put them
on that I had just doubled the value of the truck.

My 76 W115 300D had Michelin radials on it when I bought it in July
2005. I had no idea how old they were when I got the car. They were on
it until the summer of 2019, (if my memory serves to be reasonably
correct). During that time I did not drive it a huge number of miles and
much of the driving was around town, but I began to worry about the age
of the tires. They did not exhibit any cracks etc and had lots of
remaining tread but were obviously old. When we changed them out, I
asked the tech to keep 2 of the 4 that were on the car for me (the spare
was different so I did not want it) because I needed a couple of 14"
tires to put on our wood splitter out at the lake and 14" are becoming
harder to come by. The tech ultimately selected a pair and told me they
were not too bad but that the other 2 were not good at all. A good thing
I finally decided to change them.

[MBZ] Could have been disaster

2022-03-31 Thread RICK HAWKINS via Mercedes
Folks

Tuesday, I was hauling a 6700 lb forklift on my rollback isuzu from Tybee to
Denmark SC. I thought I had checked everything .. I aired up the 19.5 inch
tires and inspected. Right after I reached Ft Pulaski … about a mile on the
marsh causeway to Savannah, I heard a POW and flap flap … right front tire
blew…. I made a turn in the used to be 3 lane road, now 2 lanes with truck and
trailer and slowly limped back to Tybee on the rim ….I dumped the truck Ar a
friends place which was closer. Yesterday I used my groovy torque multiplier
gizmo and loosened the 41 mm lug nuts that were I am sure, over torqued. The
factory spec is 350# and I say why so high?

Anyway, I think my tires have aged out …. I bought some Walmart $190 delivered
tires that were $140 about 14 months ago or less. Still waiting on a delivery
…. I got another supposedly coming from local Mavis at the same price as
Walmart. Their’s was supposed to come today but I paid no money down to order it

So despite good tread, over and over I am taught that tires age out … I have
not looked for date codes but I guess I should

Have any of you tried these?

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WRVBSC9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8=1

I read pros and cons

My tires are 225/70R19.5 and the charts say I should use about 6 Oz of beads
per tire

Anyway, I guess I am broke down in paradise, on tybee island

Instagram printerrickthe if you want to see the tire

Peace
