That's nuts. My dealer requires ID and proof of ownership and they have to 
match. That’s on the form from MBUSA that they have to fill out that gets 
recorded with the key in the records. They also make copies of both items that 
accompanies the form.

Someone please explain to me how my neighbor could order a key for one of my 
cars without those things?

I would be calling MBUSA to complain, as that’s a dealer policy, not an MBUSA 
policy.

That’s messed up. I’m betting that same dealer sells retail parts marked up 
from list, too.

And that’s bogus, as the dealer should have just ordered a new key with proof 
of ownership. There’s nothing that Mercedes does that requires the presence of 
the car.

More often than not there is a small reluctor (coil) that’s in the end of the 
key that breaks. It’s not anchored to the circuit board, so over the years of 
the key being banged around the reluctor moves around and eventually breaks the 
wire on one end. It’s a pretty simple fix with a soldering iron.

The key fob on my friend's 99 E320 had a similar issue and made the car
undriveable.  The dealer would not issue him a new key without physical
presence of his car so he had to tow it in, but he had parked in a garage
with ceilings too low for a tow truck.  He found a locksmith to repair the
key, but it took a couple weeks.

A wrap costs maybe $2-3k. That’s maybe a $4-5k car at this point, buy one with 
rough paint, throw on a wrap and you’ll have something somewhat “interesting” 
for say $6-8k if you’re into that sort of thing. No way it’s worth $25k but 
some fool might think it is. Good luck to the seller!

Makes me think of the local Costco returns liquidation outlet some years ago.
Their Delo 400 jugs were priced at MORE than you could get them at Costco,
though probably slightly less than at FLAPS.  (I think Costco was a hair over
$6/gallon in 6-gallon cases.)  Then the oil prices shot up, and even at Costco
it was something like $12/gallon.  All of a sudden that $9/gallon overpriced
oil started looking pretty good.  I bought all they had.

Point being, market prices can and do change, and you have to be paying
attention.  My tired 560SEL that was going to be hard to sell is probably now
worth 2-3x what it was.  (I really need to get on that, while the getting is 
good.)

Powering this Mercedes 300D for sale is a 3-litre 6-cylinder diesel 
engine. Which in 1976 they took all the 240D models and changed them to 
300D but other than a face lift, all engines stayed the same.

That will buff right out, if you use the special buffing pad made only of
$100 bills.
Works every time looks like a couple thousand to replace the airbags
also... ouch...

I don't really think it's way out of line, considering the time and
effort it would take to build a 5-speed 300D yourself. A lot would
depend on the condition otherwise, does the ACC work properly, all the
other accessories, any rust, etc.

I'd be interested in that if it were closer, and if I needed another
car.
