[MBZ] Craigslist Search

2014-08-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I'm trying to find a way to search the local area CL for multiple MB listings.
Using saved searches on CL works, but it's sort of a PITA to have to click
through all of them.

I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a third party application or web
site that will do the same and possibly even email me when there's a hit on
something.

Hmm. Good idea. I stopped using RSS when Apple upgraded Safari a while
back. In other words, they eliminated RSS feeds, or made it less than easy to
do so. I just pulled the plugs on mine because they stopped working.

I may set up FireFox or Chrome to do that

Thanks!

Ditto on RSS feeds, I have a bunch that I set up in Google Reader.
Works fine from the web or, if you swing that way, the Android Google
Reader app.

You can change cities just by changing the prefix in the feed, so if
you are searching for the same things in the area then it is pretty
quick to paste one and edit the base URL.

Of course a month ago I'd have said Jaxed, but...

Wow, that's awesome! Thanks, Rolf!

I have long nursed a grudge against CL for deliberately crippling
their search feature so that not only can't you do any kind of Boolean
search, but also non-alphanumeric characters are stripped out (for
example, try searching for 5.0 mustang---your results will include
any ad with 50 in it).

Searchtempest looks like it gives back most of what I want, although
regexps would be nice...

Yup, what others are saying.

SearchTempest (ST) used to be stellar but CL made them change something awhile
back (forgot what it was) and it became less useful. Still, taking time to
learn their search formatting helps A LOT. If going national or international,
adding a ST RSS feed to Google Reader makes it infinitely easier. After you set
parameters and see the results, click the Feeds For This Search link for
instructions on loading it into Google. The interface is cleaner with fewer
pages to click through.

Like Rolf, I now use RSS - actually an autoloading Firefox RSS browser plug-in.

But using an RSS feed only allows you to get a feed for achieve
category, not a specific search string, correct?

I want to be able to search for something like vintage stereo, for
 example.

 Yup, what others are saying.

SearchTempest (ST) used to be stellar but CL made them change something
awhile back (forgot what it was) and it became less useful. Still, taking
time to learn their search formatting helps A LOT. If going national or
international, adding a ST RSS feed to Google Reader makes it infinitely
easier. After you set parameters and see the results, click the Feeds For
This Search link for instructions on loading it into Google. The
 interface
is cleaner with fewer pages to click through.

Like Rolf, I now use RSS - actually an autoloading Firefox RSS browser
 plug-in.

The only one that I found that has been reliable over the years is
searchtempest. Anything else will pretty much violate the TOS of CL.

Mostly I just use RSS feeds for the local region.
