[MBZ] Crankshaft dampner off on 240D
To all, What am I facing? It came off when wife was about a 1/4 mile from the house and she got it close to the house. It stayed with the car, wedged against the fan shroud and supported by the belts. 1981, manual transmission. Harry Watkins 86 SDL Silver 85 300D Euro 86 SDL Gold 81 240D manual trans

You are facing selling it to Kaleb (or me ) for 500 dollars. Did the bolt break or just come loose and drop off? The outcome here depends on the threads, in other words did the bolt just gradually back out or are the threads damaged? Best case: you get a new bolt, and you live happily ever after. If the threads are damaged, in theory you can try to machine the crank but no one I have talked to supports that on a diesel, in practice. The alternative is a new crank. I don't enjoy telling you this, but it's based on my own experience a few years ago. I was lucky... the bolt went in, tightened okay and everyone breathed a sigh of relief... when it was still there a couple of months later. Was your engine rebuilt at some point? Mac

Happened to my 81 also. It was the pulleys, not the damper. Some bolts snapped, some loose. take out the pulleys and you should be able to unscrew the broken off bolts. A dremel or die grinder to cut screwdriver slots may help. Buy 6 new allen head capscrews. (Rusty or an industrial supply place) Put the belts on the damper, put the pulleys on the damper and put the bolts in. If the damper truly is off, then you have lost the big bolt and washer. best found from a salvage engine. Make sure the alignment pins are in place and that you have the damper aligned properly so tdc is when the engine is at TDC. Replace big bolt and torque it good. I'm starting to see atrend here - should anyone with a 616 engine tighten or replace the bolts as a preventative measure? How many miles on the engines when this occured? 280K on mine. Replacement of the bolt sounds like a good idea. I don't think tightening would be wise. Is locktite used? First time near an MB dealer and the resident gorilla w/a 4 foot bar put everything back together again.. A hundred thousand miles later, it came loose again.. Got it to my Phoenix indy Dampener slot was damaged, but crank OK. He got a used dampener/balancer and new dowels. It's all back together and runs great... Take care, Chuck Phoenix, AZ 1980 300SD.

I definitely suggest that you get new bolts AND WASHERS. As I remember, the washer on the big bolt is deformed, and a new one is the only way to get the proper retaining tension. All new bolts and washers (including the big washer) cost me about $20 from the dealer. Thomas E. RE: [MBZ] Crankshaft dampner off on 240D
It is a common problem. I am not sure if it is a design problem or occurs after a PO (or their mechanic) failed to torque the bolts properly. The large bolt is VERY difficult to torque, as you must find some method to keep the crankshaft from turning whist you apply the torque. I would suggest an annual check of the dampener bolt torque.
