Those are the official restrictions.

Then there are the ones the bolsheviks intend to create. I am hoping
the bolsheviks plans will be not only an utter failure, but also make
them look ridiculous.

Has anyone ever read Dr. Zhivago? Remember how the bolsheviks operated?

I think the merged truck company (Diamond-Reo Trucks) inspired the country band.

The rock band was inspired by the prewar light truck model called the Speed
Wagon.

DC is, in my considered opinion, a Jerry Springer show on steroids.

It is widely speculated the English in 1812 could have saved the
Nation decades of grief had it been successful in burning DC to the
ground, thus forcing the Federal capital to be moved west with the
migration of the population.

I say we set them up with military style barracks housing plus a mess hall.
Congress is in session for 6 months at a go. Once session starts all members
will live together, eat together and work together, no exceptions. They eat the
same stuff our service people eat, they get the same housing our service people
get and they're paid the same or less than the lowest paid service people. If
they need to have a meeting with somebody from the outside that person comes in
to them, once they come into session they don't leave the capital until the

The rats would have followed.  That is funny, but probably not much
would have been different.

The best Idea I have heard is to keep moving it around to each state.
a year or one congress in a place, then move on.  They could hold
it in the state legislative chambers.  That would limit the time
available for both the state and the feds to do damage.

Probably a more up to date solution, is to keep each rat in their own
cage (State) and use video conferencing for the debates and committee
meetings.  Electronic votes, etc.

Then it is much easier for the local populace to hang em or throw em
out or tell em what they think.

That plan has my vote, with only one addition. The act of lobbying
congress becomes a capital crime, punishable by public hanging.

IMHO, lobbying congress is an act of sedition and treason because it
subverts the direct representation of the Citizens who elected and
empowered an individual to represent them. Treason and Sedition are
both capital crimes.

Re: [MBZ] Dc update

2011-08-07 Thread WILTON
Late one afternoon in about 1993, SWMBO and I were departing DC southbound
on our '80 240D during a heavy snow storm. As I approached the bridge near
the Jefferson Memorial, traffic in the 2 or 3 or more lanes to the right was
stalled, while a lane on the far left was clear. Of course, I took the open
lane on the left and went whipping right on across the bridge. Soon after I
was committed to this lane, I noticed that it was for multiple-occupancy (3
or more pass.) vehicles. Well, it was snowing very hard making for poor
visibility, but the pavement was still clear - only wet - and I just kept
cruising at 55 to 60 mph past hundreds of cars still stalled in all the
lanes to my right. After a few minutes, SWMBO asked, Why are we able to
cruise along so freely, and all those other cars are just sitting there or
creeping along so slowly? I replied, I don't know, but as long as this
lane is clear, I'm gonna keep cruising south. I drove like that in that
open left lane for probably 35 miles, until the lane ended, and I had to
merge with regular traffic, which was moving freely by then. When I
noticed that I had gotten into a multi-occupancy vehicle lane, I thought I'd
cause more trouble by trying to get out of it, and it was snowing so hard, a
cop could likely not see that there were only 2 in the vehicle, and it would
cause more congestion to stop me, so I just kept cruising.

Re: [MBZ] Dc update

2011-08-07 Thread Rich Thomas
Well there is a 2-lane HOV section that runs down toward Fredricksburg,
then merges with 3 lanes of I-95. The HOV lanes were moving along until
about 2 miles before the merger, then they stopped as that two lanes had
to merge into one lane of 3 backed-up lanes, which was probably causing
the 3 regular lanes to back up for 20 or 30 miles. Insane.

I have noticed that the further north (at least to the northeast) you
go, the more nannyish the states become, and the more expensive (gas in
particular), the more people acting in more unpleasant ways, traffic is
denser and slower and heavier. I lived in the Boston area for 20+

I'd never heard of the War of Northern Aggression as I grew up in Wisconsin.
Initially I thought to myself that all these Southern folk should stop living
in the past, but 10 years on I'm beginning to think there are a few good
reasons to mark the difference between North and South. Each side has good and
bad, I'll always be a Yankee, and I'm probably a better person for knowing both
cultures.

Also, down here if you go to Sunday service and the preacher allows the
congregation to pick a song from the hymnal, don't ask for Battle Hymn of the
Republic. Trust me on that.

Oh come on bubba, it's only about 95F today though the humidity is up
there since we had a bit of rain yesterday evening. It was about 100F

the temperature department this summer. I think it was actually hotter
up there than it was here for those few days until it cooled down a
bit. I just rode my bike down the road to get a paper, why, it is
positively balmy out!

PS -- about that accent thing -- that is a way to throw Yankees off,
just to make them think the speaker is stupid. It usually works pretty
well.

2011-08-07 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
Its true, these accents are very regional. I grew up in Northern NJ and
still live here. I find the accents of central NJ and Brooklyn, Queens,
Bronx, etc put me off a bit, and those areas are only about 20 miles away
from here, or less. They are a lower class trademark to some degree.
(Manhattan, of course, has no accent since no body is really from there.)

Whats interesting in the north vs south thing is how much northerns concern
themselves with southerners... very little. I think most of us yankees
think of southerners as interesting and hospitable people, if we think
about them at all. I suspect we're more interested in the rest of the
world, and rest of the country rather than what the south thinks of us.

Southerners, other the other hand, seem to always make a point to complain
about Northerners, as we've seen here.

While the north may have its share of pushy impatient people, and high cost
of living, we're a very tolerant group. I feel that the hate, or dislike,
of large groups of any kind is much less common. After all, just about
every minority you can think of lives here.

I, to can easily and readily distinguish accents from different areas, even
MI from MN, NE, Dakotas, etc., or VA from NC and different areas within NC.
BTW, I may have reacquired a bit of Southern since my return to NC 32 years
ago. Everybody has some sort of an accent, and that's O. K. - it doesn't
mean that one is any smarter, or whatever, than another. I've even learned

(Manhattan, of course, has no accent since no body is really from
 there.)

Whats interesting in the north vs south thing is how much northerns
 concern
themselves with southerners... very little. I think most of us yankees
think of southerners as interesting and hospitable people, if we think
about them at all. I suspect we're more interested in the rest of the
world, and rest of the country rather than what the south thinks of us.

Southerners, other the other hand, seem to always make a point to
 complain
about Northerners, as we've seen here.

While the north may have its share of pushy impatient people, and high
 cost
of living, we're a very tolerant group. I feel that the hate, or dislike,
of large groups of any kind is much less common. After all, just about
every minority you can think of lives here.

You my friend have never been to any of the great northern cities. By that I
mean:
Portland, Maine
Bangor, Maine
Concord, NH
Burlington, VT
Your virtue and wallet would be safe (well relatively safe, or rather as safe
as anywhere) in those places any time of day or night...

In actual factual Boston is quite a safe city. Back when I was but a college
freshman my best friend went to BU and we'd go have noodles in Chinatown at
2am. Spent time talking to hookers and pimps, almost got mugged once but
convinced the dude he was wasting his time as we had nothing of value. In all
the nights we spent in places we really shouldn't have been we were only
accosted that one time...
My friend later went to Vassar and would run into NYC and hang out in the worst
areas of Harlem. He'd literally go looking for trouble. Never did get into
anything serious luckily. He teaches English in Japan now...

One could even think that about WWII.

Q. How do you get virtually all the politicians to care more about winning a war
than winning an election?

A. By convincing them that there won't BE another election unless they win the

That's my point, the provocation gave us the will. By declaring war on us and
immediately destroying one of our major naval bases, the Japanese made
everybody, right down to the most selfish politicians, more concerned with the
survival of our country than anything else. Vietnam was never a direct threat to
us, so our soldiers ended up used as pawns in political games.

WWII was a real conflict with a real enemy intent on doing us harm.

VietNam was an imaginary conflict with a make-believe nation to
preserve the French Colonial system after WWII, conjured up out of

Huge difference.

Not including the fact that we raised taxes to pay for one and
