You can replace the caps yourself. Here are two links that sell sets of caps for the GX 270 http://thecapking.com/gx270.html http://www.badcaps.net/store/product_info.php?cPath=1_4&products_id=2 Bad Caps will also do the job for you for a price, He's located in Mizzou. Re: [MBZ] Dells and iMacs
The cap should be common enough that he can find one at Radio Shack. I just upgraded my 20" CoreDuo iMac to a Core2Duo last week. It just so happens that the CoreDuo iMacs have socketed processors, which is unusual. Typically, they are soldered to the motherboard. $105 on eBay and an hour's work and I now had a Core2Duo 2.3GHz processor in my iMac. While I was inside it I took the opportunity to put in a larger (750GB) hard drive as well. Unfortunately, the drive failed on Sunday, apparently from heat. I was able to see its SMART status before it completely cacked, and there were numerous high temp errors. Damn! I didn't even think about the additional heat load, which I could have avoided by using a utility to run the fans at a higher speed. Poop. However, all is not lost. While restoring the original hard drive, I found an EFI update someone had written that bumps my machine up to the next level, allowing it to recognize 4GB of RAM rather than just 2GB. The firmware for the CD machines will only allow them to recognize 2GB. So now I have an iMac that is probably good for another 5-6 years. Ain't technology grand? Re: [MBZ] Dells
Low wattage iron (double sided circuit board) and solder wick or sucker. It's probably old enough to not have SMDs, so you should be able to use regular 60/40 solder as opposed to the low temperature stuff. Just locate where the leads come through, make a mark or take a photo to remember polarity (negative is usually the one that's marked on the case) and alternately heat and "rock" the cap back and forth to get the leads out of the holes. You can use desoldering wick or a solder sucker to remove solder initially, which can make it easier. It's probably a double sided board, so be darned sure you heat through before you start to remove it or you risk damaging the foil pattern. Just take your time and you should be able to do it. That reminds me - I have a G5 iMac in the garage that needs caps replaced... POS winders box as opposed to a POS overpriced toada has 4 slots for drives vs. has 4 wheels (unless you parked it in the right part of town; then it has no wheels) GX270.
