You all inspired me to give thus another go. I found I couldn't make the
latch turn all the way using the new striker, even out of the car. With
some trepidation I took off the back left and... It worked! I found that
the new latch had a little plastic bit on the bottom, and the old one's was
long gone. Apparently my front latch was low enough in the channel that
the rubber strip was preventing the latch flipping.

I broke off the back rubber piece and put the new striker in, and within a
couple positions had it so the door would close reliably. It's still not
perfect but the door is closing 75% of the time - next time I'm waiting to
meet someone I'll get it to 100% no problem. :)

Thanks all for the help and inspiration!

Yep, it's new from Q. The old one did not have the plastic bit, and
while it worked for a few years it suddenly failed; I assumed the
protrusion had just broken off then. I expected it would just start
working again when replaced, but I can't get it right.

I will check the latch as Barry mentioned, that would also explain the
sudden failure I suppose. The back right also doesn't have the
protrusion but it will close with moderate force; I have the part but
haven't been brave enough to replace that striker yet since it's still
kind-of working. :)

And I do hope Scott's replacement went faster than mine!

Thanks!

Take a look at your door strike and compare it to one on a working door.
There is a small piece of plastic in the bottom that sticks out just a
little bit on a good one. This piece is what usually fails and causes the
door not to latch all of the way. Make sure that piece is there or no
amount of tinkering will get it right.

Tim -
This probably isn't the problem if the latch was working before you messed
with the striker but I had a problem like that once with my 107 door latch.
Turned out that there was a sort of hairpin spring in the door latch assy.
That broke in half and didn't allow the latch to cock or reset to the ready
to latch position. As I recall I could manually re-cock the latch and then
it would close normally. You could try that as a check. The bad part is that
the spring is only available as part of the latch assy.

Is it a new part? Or an old one?

Not engaging the second latch without a vigorous slam is a
failure mode. The first one I encountered I spend a _lot_ of
time messing with the moving mechanical part in the door.
Finally I swapped the fixed "cone" assembly from the door frame
and the problem was solved. Since then I have replaced a number
of them. Most annoyingly, I can't _see_ a difference! So by
looking I can't tell if a given piece is good or bad. It
_really_ bugs me!

I will assume he will get them out, but I have a question on the next step:
how do you put them back on? I can't get the second latching on my striker
no matter how I position it. I get the first latch no problem but even at
the outermost position the latch part doesn't flip the second time. Is
there a trick to setting these things up?

A smack with the hammer loosened the bond in the taper and puts less stress
on the tool and bolt head. Less chance of stripping the hex. They turn
out with ease after smacking them.

The problem is probably not the threads, but the taper fit of
the head. I have used Kroil to lube. And often a solid "smack"
on the screw can shift stuff enough to allow it to turn.

When I put it back together again, I always put a bit of grease
on that taper.

Just smack the bolts with a brass hammer before removing them with a good
5mm on a ratchet. Has worked for me on some that would not budge with an
Allen wrench.

These screws seem very soft and the hex sockets deformed easily.
