It looks similar (going from memory) to consoles I've seen pictured in w123 brochures for fleet cars. They had special consoles for police, fire, transit inspector, etc., and for taxi use. Looks a bit like a console out of a /8 Perhaps it is a special French version, made especially because the standard one is too Germanic? Or maybe MB where just using up old bits and pieces they had lying around and then flog them off to the French.
