Unplug the wiper motor and try another fuse.
If it doesn't blow, time to try another wiper motor!

Technical terms...

"open" means the electricity encounters a gap so it stops
flowing. Like a burned out fuse.

"short" means a "shortcut" past the proper destination,
therefore the intended work doesn't get done. And it usually
means very high current flow so wires melting or fires
starting are a real possibility.

To avoid catastrophe, a fuse can be put in series so if the
current flow gets to great the fuse opens and shuts off the
flow. Annoying, but better than catastrophe.

I needed to replace al my fuses. I could only find "fuse kits"
containing a fraction of what is needed. I would have had to get 4

I stumbled across jbug.com , a VW supply house.

What is more intriguing is that the metal fuse elements are copper.
This should extend the service life of the fuses considerably since
electrolytic corrosion of the lesser metal (aluminum) will be
eliminated.

Re: [MBZ] Fuses

2007-08-24 Thread Curt Raymond

Which reminds me how I learned this. I'd installed plugs in my pickup and put a
dab of dielectric grease on each plug, then put on the wire.
What you're supposed to do is put a smear around the boot so moisture can't
seep in.
Truck ran okay for awhile but it got so at low RPMs sometimes the whole truck
would shudder.
I replaced the plugs and apparently that rubbed off enough grease that
everything was okay...

The definition of "dielectric" is "not-conductive", or
"anti-electric", or "insulator".

It can enhance connections by preventing oxidation.

I use regular chassis grease on the battery connections on my '52 Farmall. That
6v battery has everything it can do to start the tractor, dirty connections
will easily make it a no-go.
The grease helps the connections stay clean longer and makes them easier to
clean.

You don't need conductive grease. The purpose of the grease is
to keep the air (oxygen) away from the metal. I use wheel
bearing grease on practically every electrical connection from
the battery terminals to lamp sockets. I have never seen any
evidence of a increase in resistance - but I do get 5 year-old
battery connections that have no corrosion and 20 year-old
in-line repairs under the car that are still reliable.

Re: [MBZ] Fuses

2007-08-24 Thread LarryT
there is dielectric grease which enhances connecctions - have a tube in my
toolbox that I checked the last time this question came up - it says,
"Dielectric" and that it "enhances electrical connections". I believe there
is also a Dielectric Grease which does not enhance the connection but I
believe both are called Dielectric.

There are "contact enhancers" such as Stabilant. Very good, very
expensive. It's meant for card-edge or plug/pin type connections, not
switches or other momentary, moving contacts.

They aren't on the same fuse - but I did replace the fuse for the EDS,
since I replaced all of them. I didn't notice that one being bad, but
it sure runs better with all new fuses - and my pistons aren't

For those of you in Canada, you can usually find all the different sizes
real cheap in Canadian Tire. I do them on my porsche as Larry says. I also
put a dab of dielectric grease on the ends of each and give them a spin
ffrom time to time. I've never had a fuse, connection, or ground related
problem with that car yet, and it's an '80.

[MBZ] Fuses -----

2007-07-22 Thread OK Don
It's been a while since I recall seeing this topic, so I thought I'd
make sure that it remains forefront in our minds ;-)

Two weeks ago the SDL started loping at idle - not enough to see the
tach needle swing, but enough to be disconcerting. Two days ago the
ACC stopped working - totally. No response to any button. The
indicator light for the mono valve stayed off.
A few years ago, on advise from this list, I purchased a couple of
complete fuse replacement kits from Rusty. This seemed like a good
time to install one -

Rather than attempt to even determine which fuses might be suspect, I
proceeded to replace all the fuses in the fuse box under the hood
(bonnet for those not in the US). As I removed one fuse that was quite
blown, I looked it up and found it to be for the ACC, among other
circuits.

The ACC works fine now, and the engine idles smooth and steady as you
could ask for.

Therefore - to paraphrase our guru - "Replace ALL the FUSES now!!!".

I seem to have solved a couple of my recent questions. The fuse that was
blowing was the wrong size. It was a white
one so 8A and should have been a red one 16A. It turns out to be the fuse for
the auxiliary fan so that now works.
Still some stuff to figure out but I am happy that turned out to be so easy.

I can trace the wiring or pull the fuse and see what does not work. I just
thought that someone out there might
know or remember what the various fuse boxes are for or know where in the CD

diagrams I suppose. That might tell me something as the older diagrams are a

[MBZ] Fuses in a 115?

2006-07-31 Thread R A Bennell
My 76 300D has the one main fuse block on the left front fender. Just above and
ahead of it are 3 more small fuse
boxes. Two of them have pop off covers and the 3rd one has a threaded rod with
a knob on top that must be undone to
remove the cover.
Each of the 3 has 2 fuses.

One of the pop off boxes has a red fuse and a white fuse. The white one keeps
blowing. I am wondering if both fuses
should be red. All of the other small boxes with 2 fuses seem to have 2 of the
same color. That makes me wonder if
this one should as well. Anyone out there know for sure?

I can do some more poking around but am hoping for input from the list. The
older I get, the more I like things
that are easy.

Randy B
