Re: [MBZ] Getting a Cummins

2020-10-05 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
No, I had a disagreement with one of their franchisees. They refused to
do anything to even partially correct the situation or even own up to
any responsibility. Their attitude was not just indifferent but
hostile. The actual dollar ammount this cost me was not worth legal
action but because of how they handled it I did swear off buying their
gasoline and other products (prior to this I used to prefer them when I
had a choice).

Re: [MBZ] Getting a Cummins

2020-10-05 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Are you running Dino or synthetic 15w40?

In my 606 I was running the old Delo 5w40 LE(?) and it seemed like I had to top
the oil a coupe of times per oil change. The last couple of changes I switched
to Rotella T6 5w40 and right when it was due for a change the low oil message
would come on, so it was down a qt. Now Delo has a new formula that is
supposedly approved for gas and diesel. Not sure if I want to try Delo again or
try something else, or stick with Rotella.

I am not a fan of Shell either. It might not be any more but there was a
time when, if gas prices went up, it was always Shell that raised the
price first around here.

In addition, I had a 1977 Mercury that was not tolerant of the Shell
gasoline. It would ping if I ran Shell. It was fine if I ran Esso so, I
gave up on Shell.

I have been running Delo in my old 300D too.

Re: [MBZ] Getting a Cummins

2020-10-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Besides the Mercedes fleet I also own and operate 5 Ford F350 with the 7.3
diesel engine and one F 450, also 7.3 engine.
Rotella oil in those engines leaks and blows out... fresh oil change and
1,500 miles I lose a quart.. all the engines are in good shape, wear and
maintenance wise..
When I removed the Rotella oil and shifted to Castrol Diesel oil... each
engine immediately did not lose oil, or leak oil. Since then, I've tried
other diesel oils [all 15 / 40 wt] with no oil loss... as soon as I do a
shift back to Rotella... oil loss...

So.. Rotella is on my "don't like list".. for the trucks, and everything
else in the diesel fleet.

Re: [MBZ] Getting a Cummins

2020-10-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm not a fan of 15w40 but then I live where it gets cold. I'm reasonably sure
the ASV has 15w40 conventional and it cranks slow in the cold and really
requires the block heater. That oil only has maybe 100 hours on it but its 5
years old now, I'm thinking of changing it with synthetic. John Deere (its a JD
engine) recommends 10w40 or 0w40.

My 2015 VW Jetta TDI REQUIRES 10w30 which I find difficult to swallow after
years of MB diesels. Otherwise I'd run 5w40 in everything except the pickup
which wants 5w20.

Why are you not a fan of Rotella? What oil do you like?

Here's something to know: it's a 5.9 liter engine. 5.7 is gas.

Change the fuel filter now... and travel with a spare..

Oil "should make the trip" with the miles it has since last change...
However.. it's been driven only short trips and been setting a lot, which
is perfect to absorb moisture I would change oil and filter before
taking the road.
I'm not a fan of Rotella... you get to pick what you put in it. Diesel
synthetic has won me over... 15-40 wt...

I'm a Ford Powerstroke guy and I have friends who drive Cummins Dodges...

[MBZ] Getting a Cummins

2020-10-04 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
My pops and I swapped trucks. He wanted my 2016 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi 80k miles, I
get his2005 Dodge 2500 SLT Cummins 5.7 4x4 112k miles, and a $4k check. Drove
here to Illinois to make the swap. He was trying to guilt me into it saying I’d
feel bad if my 85 year old father somehow fell and broke a hip while climbing
into a 2500 4x4 while knowing he wanted my truck.
He bought it new when he still lived in AZ. Up until last year he towed around
a backhoe he had that he used to dig holes to set septic tanks. Right around
Thanksgiving last year he sold the backhoe, finally ready to really retire at
85. Since then, he has barley driven it except for the occasional trip to
Menards.
Three questions. I know nothing yet about Cummins 5.7 engines yet. The oil
(Rotella non-synthetic) is a year old, a little less than 1000 miles on it.
Should I change the oil before I head back or change it after the 1850 mile
trip back...or both? Also, should i change or anticipate having to change the
fuel filter on the way back? What else should i be concerned about before we
take off?
