i found it really easy to get my glowplugs out on my 84 300D with a 12mm
ratcheting wrench. Sockets were too awkward to fit.

Bob,
In the case of my brother's 78 300D, it meant that there was something up
with the glow system. About two months later, it turned into a hard to
start condition as the weather cooled. You probably won't have THAT
problem
in the phoenix area :)
Marshall sent me a diagnostic that was way easier than the CD, so I
forwarded
it to you. In my case, I had just enough resistance built up in the #2
hole from carbon that the #1 plug wasn't getting all it was supposed to.
LT Don's suggestion of beating it with a stick - literally, remove glow
plug,
stuff a small piece of wood in there to break apart the carbon, then
replace the plug - was spot on what fixed the problem.
IIRC, it's either a 21 or 22mm wrench (or deepish socket that will not
fit around the oil filter canister or IP) needed to get the glow plugs
out.
Good luck...
