At the differential, there is a seal for the axle shaft. Seal is easy to change - but the axle shaft has to come out first. This involves a bit more, but it's not especially hard. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Grease in rear hub
Grease in the hub can only come from the wheel bearing or the outer axle joint, and probably not the outer joint, since it would have to travel through the bearing to show up on the brakes. Time to change the wheel bearing -- pull shaft, unscrew retainer, drive out bearing, press new on int, re-install axle. Might not be a job you want to do at home. Re: [MBZ] Grease in rear hub
Yup, it's on the permanently sealed (and hence lifetime lubed) wheel bearing, which will have to be replaced. 1984 300D - Just found an abundance of grease deposited in the drivers side rear brake hub. Is there a seal that needs to be replaced? How difficult is it to replace? The axle shaft can't readily leak its goo into there, but the wheel bearing can. Unfortunately, rear MB wheel bearings are not really in the DIY province. I took mine to the indy, he said it's a real nasty job even _with_ the special press tool. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
