The original fluid in at least thru early '87 WAS ATF. Only later did
Mercedes change to a proprietary power steering fluid.

I know. That was my attempt at humor.

The first thing I did was smell it and it didn't smell like antifreeze.

Here's a scientific test: I'll set some of it out for the incessantly
barking dogs next door and monitor the resutlts.

Relax, humor again.

Cool. Thanks for the link to where I can get more of the stuff when needed.

Interesting that is says it's compatible with original fluid, but is
not to be mixed with transmission fluid.

Exactly, antifreeze is slimy (because it's basic---like an egg white)
while P/S fluid (even the weird Audi stuff) is oily. The difference
is obvious to touch.

Naw, I fell for that in college.

Seriously though, that was something that crossed my mind -
contamination. Hmm. Just another piece of the puzzle with this car.

Like how can the thing look so well-preserved and run so well with
268k mi. on it? The seller says he was told the engine and tranny were
rebuilt, but he did not want to make that claim since he could not
confirm it.

He also claimed he had a great "German guy" mechanic. Perhaps how the
green hydraulic fluid got in there?

2007-09-10 Thread Robert & Tara Ludwick
Someone may have put the green Pentosin steering fluid in. It's just a
green hydraulic fluid, so I imaging it would be fine. It's the spec for
some Audis and other cars.
I don't think it mixes well with the red stuff, so I wouldn't put tranny
fluid in there.
