I just checked my Roman Martyrology and see no Mercedes Maria for today...Hmm.
Emil Jellinek (Daimler's rep in France in the early 1900's) got permission to
call Daimlers Mercedes in France as Daimler was too German sounding. His
daughter was named Mercedes after Our Lady of Mercy (aka Our Lady of Ransom) -
a Spanish devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Even thought Jellinek was a Jew,
he was enamored of all things Spanish and was the representative in France of
the Catholic Monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Jellinek marketed Daimlers
in Hungary under the name Maja (his other daughter). Jellinek ended up dying in
a French prison during WWI - accused of spying for Austro-Hungary. Mercedes
Jellinek wrote a book about her dad, My Father Mr. Mercedes. She died in
poverty.

Mercedes is a common Spanish and German girls name. I had a great aunt Mercedes
(German)...pronounced mer-said-es.
