Probably Hagerty or one of the others doing the underwriting for USAA. I know
that Hagerty has a relationship with most of the big insurers, as when I first
signed up with them my Allstate agent called me and wanted me to assign my
policy to them.

Yeah, I don't think so

The regular classic plate is good for ten years, but if you have an old annual plate from the year the car was made (like a 1972 plate for your 1972 W109), you only have to pay one registration fee for as long as you own the car.
$100 a year is mind-boggling to me for a car that can't be used for daily transportation.

I asked about that the last time I renewed in April and was told
that when the cars get to 30 years they automatically get charged
the antique rate even though you still get the regular plates. If
you want the blue plates then you have to pay extra for them
unless it's time to get new plates anyway.

Dan--- via Mercedes wrote:

In Florida that adds absolutely no value, as there's no difference between an
"antique" registration and a regular one. I think it's a couple bucks cheaper a
year, that's it.

Out by me, the state tries to rapaciously gather funds when you register the
car, but after that you are scott free. No annual anything. Some limitations
on usage, but I seem to be able to gather some good mileage over the past half
year. The SL lives in the garage and does not go out much, the SDL gets the
miles to rack up

I was talking to MMM…. And how much cheaper was USAA? And did it include full
no deductible coverages like collision, comp, etc.? Roadside service and
guaranteed flatbed towing?

Hopefully you have those cars insured under a classic car policy, like one from
Hagerty. They insure my 1982 300D for barely $300/year with full replacement
coverage. The only major requirement they have is that you must have a “daily
driver” that’s insured by a major carrier.

I put the E300D on a Hagerty policy today, and I think it’s around $260/year
for full coverage as well. If I insured it with Allstate it would cost me
around $2000/year.

In Michigan the threshold is 25 years, but they count slightly differently than
I do. In December 2011, my 1986 201.034 was 25 years old, must buy a regular
plate. In January 2012, it was over 25 years old and I could buy a historic
vehicle plate. At least that's what a woman at the Secretary of State's office
told me in 2011.

I just looked it up. The SoS website now says the vehicle must be 26 years old,
which makes sense in light of what I wrote above. It still must be renewed
every ten years and the fee is $30, or $3 a year.

A historical vehicle must be:

26 or more years old
Owned solely as a collector's item
Used only for events such as historical club activities, parades, and car
shows

http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1585_1595_52364-204909--,00.html

Note: A vehicle registered with a historical or authentic plate cannot be used
for routine, day-to-day transportation.

So what I'm hearing is I need a ramshackle cabin in the middle of Nowhere,
WA that has a property tax of $5 a year, but offers me a "Home Address"
then I can plate the car with "Only drive this once, maybe twice a year
plates" permanently ... and drive as much as I want here in Indiana. :)

(Which wouldn't actually work anyway, we have laws about the length of
time

you can drive an out of state vehicle before you must get IN plates, but I
digress.)

2017-05-10 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Mitch's state (MI) has some really draconian classic/collector plate laws. I
read through them one time when a friend was going to send their kid to school
in Ann Arbor with one of his old MBs. Bad idea.

As for Indiana, what's to stop you from doing it? They have to stop you first,
which, unless you're being a jerk or driving poorly, is unlikely.

People do this in FL all the time, as our insurance is stupid expensive, and
when a new resident discovers this they'll often go to great lengths to avoid
registering their car here. Oh, that and the $200+ fee we charge everyone when
they bring a car in from out of state

I did this when we moved back in 2010 and got busted, only because I forgot my
registration had expired on my Indiana plate. When I got nailed for it, I
signed the title back over to the wife (I bought the car in Florida and titled
it there, but insured it under my existing Indiana policy) who was still in
Indiana, and it only cost about $50 to sort it out. That kept me from having to
insure the car in FL until the following October.

(Which wouldn't actually work anyway, we have laws about the length of time
you can drive an out of state vehicle before you must get IN plates, but I
digress.)

I forget what a historic vehicle plate costs in MI, but it's not out
of the "let's go to the bar and grab a big pizza and some beer" range.
Less than a regular annual plate for any of my cars. It's good for
driving to historic vehicle events and the occasional joyride. If a
cop sees you driving it to work repeatedly at 8am, he will pull you over.

The regular classic plate is good for ten years, but if you have an
old annual plate from the year the car was made (like a 1972 plate for
your 1972 W109), you only have to pay one registration fee for as long
as you own the car.
$100 a year is mind-boggling to me for a car that can't be used for
daily transportation.

2017-05-10 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I don't recall what the threshold is, but in Florida you can do "year of issue"
plates on cars older than a certain number of years. It's a one time flat fee,
which is nice, since if you're planning on keeping the car for any amount of
time you can save a chunk of change.

Try researching the classic/collector/antique registrations in different
states. It's a crazy patchwork quilt of laws, none of which are consistent
between states.

They're probably talking about it being eligible for classic or antique

In Florida that adds absolutely no value, as there's no difference between an
"antique" registration and a regular one. I think it's a couple bucks cheaper a
year, that's it.
