Aren't those wires also live when using the ODB port to power the system?
The battery in a trunk you can't open does require something like the ODB
port, but I wonder if the lighter socket won't do the same thing?

True, but this is far more elegant of an approach, especially if you’re 
changing a battery. You would be wrestling live battery cables around the 
engine compartment while you’re trying to swap a battery.

a vid use it to pop the trunk on a W220 with a dead battery, it will 
also maintain all your settings when you disconnect the main battery.  
You can (maybe) connect to a jump pack or some other 12V source.  I
