I also don't want HTML e-mail, but I think Kaleb's solution is a good compromise. There are plenty of times people reasonably want to send pictures, and wouldn't be bothered to find a web host, etc. There are a few knowledgeable posters on the Ritter list (mercedeslist.com), but I don't follow it; I tend to let it queue up for a few weeks and then quickly flip through the pages of discussion looking for the few threads that are of interest and/or where I recognize the names. What really amazes me is that they appear to be proud of the fact that they have deliberately chosen to not move ahead. I suppose it may be a bit like choosing to drive a mid 70's MB diesel - eccentric to say the least. BUT as I suggested to them, photos really help to explain things in so many cases and people are often unwilling to go through the process of putting the photo on a hosting site so that they can send a link. I much prefer the way it works on here. Randy On 08/02/2011 3:54 PM, Dieselhead wrote: "a bit absurd these days. I.e., say you have an image that prints out at 4x6" on your inkjet printer; go to the "resize" dialog in Photoshop and tell it to change the dpi from 300 to 100 and you'll get a file that looks the same on the screen and prints out the same size, but is one-ninth the size in kB, and nine times more pixellated. Arguably this behavior muddies the issue, but things have been this way at least since the very first Macs, when the little 72-pixel-per-inch screen was a selling point just because it meant that on-screen image size corresponded exactly to printed image size (on the 72-dpi ImageWriter dot-matrix printer); when the first LaserWriter came along, I remember discussions of how 72-dpi bitmapped clip art and fonts were ugly when scaled up to the LaserWriter's native 300 dpi, and how a 300-dpi bitmap, on the other hand, looked good on both screen and paper (with, again, the implicit premise that a change in dpi could affect file size without affecting "eyeball" size). Boy, _that's_ the truth! But now it's time for a lesson on computer images. "DPI" (dots per inch) or "PPI" (pixels per inch) is a useless number EXCEPT if there is a piece of paper involved. In other words, for printers and scanners only. It can be helpful when dealing with documents that will be print - say, putting a photo on a layout for a page to be printed. For digital cameras and computer monitors it is useless - because there is no way to measure an inch! While the image is electronic, all that matters is number of pixels. 1600 px wide image is 1600 px. If you print it with a resolution of 1600 DPI, it will be one inch wide. If you print it at a resolution of 160 DPI it will be 10 inches wide. If you don't print it, the DPI is just a tag that rides along with the image and nothing more. If your computer is set to 1600 px wide, it doesn't matter if it's a 3" screen or a 20 foot screen the 1600 px image will fill the 1600 px screen. (if the view program is set to show (zoomed to) one pixel per pixel) So I'm picking on Alex a bit. *smiles* But changing the DPI won't help make huge images smaller. _Scaling_ the images so it is composed of fewer pixels is what's needed. -- Philip, image pro - now off his soapbox ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Depending whose statistics you believe, somewhere between 40-70% of the US (by population, not area!) has no broadband access. Not much point having a big mailbox if you can still only download stuff from it at 56kbps max. It doesn't help that most people can't be bothered to learn how to resize the huge files from their umpteen-megapixel cameras down to a reasonable dpi for onscreen viewing. Links to attachments are better. You can always download from the link if you want a local copy for some reason. We went through this about a year ago right? Kaleb allowed attachments for a while and the list seemed to prefer the current method. Of course I'm one of the old luddites who thinks HTML has no place in email, either. Kaleb, I'm on that list also. And I would comment to them, but they seem to take everything the wrong way...personal attacks on their immense intelligence, etc. So, I'd rather watch them come of with inane excuses as to why they can't or don't want to do something. Poor overworked admins and all. I appreciate all the work that admins do on this list and that, but not all of the excuses. Mostly, those in charge of the stolen Easley List just don't want to give up power and control. I don't know what will happen when they die...
