Mao has his out front, mine cower beside the garage. Well the 240D is front and
center in the driveway, I haven't figured out how to drag it to a good parking
spot yet, need to roust out the Cub Cadet.

Just got home from NYC and ran to the garage to do the triage on Hammie.
As I got near the front I knew it was going to be worse than I feared,
oil on the ground, oil on the grill, oil on the hood. My wife had made
it sound better than it is.

The hose that connected the two oil cooler hoses gave up the ghost,
split right in half actually. Apparently I had treated it too roughly
last weekend in my abortive oil cooler replacement. Worse the
replacement oil cooler has arrived, its on my kitchen table...

Engine is tight, I put a wrench on the PS belt and can spin the belt
right around the main pulley, hit the key and the starter clunks but
nothing else. I didn't want to do more and get greasy with the clothes I
have on.

He was a good friend for 7 years but this is it, off to that great
highway in the sky.

On a positive note the registration for the Red 190D arrived so I'm off
to the registry.

I realize that some people have never lived where they salt roads,

My life was saved by a Karmann Ghia that was the rustiest car I ever

Detriot heard of crush zones.

But, like Yogi, I am not the average bear. A very rusty MB is not a

I had a 190Dc that was rusted so bad that when you opened the back
door, it sagged so much it was hard to get the door closed again. I
had welded the front bumper on with coathanger and scrap metal (It
was rusted off)

When a ford pulled out in front of me and I could not avoid it, The
ford was totalled, and on the MB, I had to wire up the right side of
the front bumper and it lost the right side chrome strip under the
doors. We finished the trip and I drove it for another year or so.

Now, Tell be about how your new detriot iron is better than a rusty old MB?

[MBZ] Its worse than that he's dead Jim.

2010-07-22 Thread Curt Raymond
Just got home from NYC and ran to the garage to do the triage on Hammie.
As I got near the front I knew it was going to be worse than I feared, oil on
the ground, oil on the grill, oil on the hood. My wife had made it sound better
than it is.

The hose that connected the two oil cooler hoses gave up the ghost, split right
in half actually. Apparently I had treated it too roughly last weekend in my
abortive oil cooler replacement. Worse the replacement oil cooler has arrived,
its on my kitchen table...

Engine is tight, I put a wrench on the PS belt and can spin the belt right
around the main pulley, hit the key and the starter clunks but nothing else. I
didn't want to do more and get greasy with the clothes I have on.

He was a good friend for 7 years but this is it, off to that great highway in

On a positive note the registration for the Red 190D arrived so I'm off to the

I've always thought that for oil pressure, an audible alarm should accompany
the gauge. Most people (maybe trained pilots excepted) do not check that

Well, it is probably the difference between French and German
sensibilities. My understanding is that the German mentality regards
cars is that you should know what you are doing, and should pay
attention at all times to the operation of said vehicle, and should
become aware when the car is not performing appropriately, and act
accordingly if ist nicht in ordnung. (the French approach is probably
exactly the opposite, laissez faire, non?, though I cannot verify that
from any direct experience)

How might one wire a lamp? A switch that is open by the voltage of the
proper reading, which then closes if the voltage drops below whatever
threshold? Do we have any idea what voltages correspond to the various
oil pressure readings on the gauge? I guess a simple circuit of some
kind, with an LED or something that comes on?

Generally, I think an oil pressure warning lamp is switched on by completing
the circuit to ground. If pressure
drops the circuit is completed and the light comes on. Would work the same with
a buzzer and one could easily have
both. I'm getting old and hard of hearing though. Sometimes my cell phone rings
and between the noise of the
vehicle and the radio or whatever, I may not hear the cell phone ring. I like
the vibrater doodad as if it is in my

become aware when the car is not performing appropriately, and act
accordingly if ist nicht in ordnung.

 Hi, All.
The old ID19 Citroen that I had in the UK had a very large
multi-purpose red STOP lamp on the dash for such things as hydraulic
failures, oil pressure, ignition etc. Can't understand why they didn't
become popular, maybe it was the heart-stopping effect of sudden
 illumination?
Geez! that was a long time ago.

I never did it, but I had plans to install a large red light on the

small dash light. Might scare you if it went on
 in the dark.

I've always thought that for oil pressure, an audible alarm should
accompany the gauge. Most people (maybe trained
pilots excepted) do not check that continually, and it doesn't take
long for a running engine with zero oil
 pressure to damage itself.

On a positive note the registration for the Red 190D arrived so I'm off

The hose that failed isn't that old, maybe 10 months. Apparently not rated for
hot oil

Looking now like I might buy Dwight's 240D. If I do Hammie will donate his
dashpot shock to retrofit the older car.

Wire it so that it gets feed when you turn the key - like all the
other dash lights to prove all lights are operational for the ride you
are going to take.

Oil pressure switches are readily available. Despite some otherwise
(IMHO) questionable engineering, VW engines actually do this well. They
have an idle pressure circuit and a high pressure circuit. If pressure
is too low at idle, a red lamp illuminates on the dash. If pressure is
too low above 1800 RPM or so, the red lamp blinks and a really attention
getting, raspy buzzer sounds. You cannot ignore it.

They don't have a pressure gauge though, so if the alarm goes off you
have no means to verify whether the oil pressure is really low or the
switch is faulty (a common problem).

Or the good old Murphy switch -- no oil pressure and the engine shuts
off. Have to hold the manual override down to start it.

Ooh - How about dropping a turbo engine in there - huh?

It is a manual transmission, wasn't it?
