Halfway decent Chinese 4 leg stands with ratchet height adjusters are
about $25-35US with a cheap hydraulic floor jack included. (but you will
probably want to chock the wheels, lift with the factory jack, and put
the stand under the rubber jack point)

If you have any of the 1970's style with a three legged 5 wide base,
and height adjustment by sticking a 3/8 pin in a hole, scrap them
and get something better.

That's my point, you can buy heavy duty (relative to a car) stands for
not much money.
Still you have to be careful where you use them, on concrete/asphalt no
problem but on soft ground extra care needs to be taken.
It is a good idea once the car is up to try and move it with your hand
to determine how stable it is, you do not want to find out the hard way.

I do some work on my dirt driveway. Always put the stands, and often the
jack, on a piece of 2x12 lumber. 12 long works fine for a jack stand,
36 for the floor jack so it can roll freely as it raises.

Craig McCluskey wrote:

 Rubber jack point?

My W201, and I'm pretty sure my W116, has four rubber pads under the body
that are intended for lifting the entire car on a shop hoist. With the 201,
it's mandatory to use these because many of the other possible jack points
have plastic fairings or belly pans under them. (my 201 is a 16v, others
may vary, I don't think all 201s have fairings on the control arms) When I
want to raise the 201 fully, I put the back end on ramps and raise the
front with the factory jack, putting the stands under the round rubber
pads located inboard of the rocker panel jack tubes. I've only jacked
up my 300SD to remove wheels, it's tall enough to let me do stuff like
tranny fluid changes without raising the car. A previous owner put
P215/75R14 tires on it, so it's taller than the average W116. Also gets
27mpg at 80mph, possibly aided by the larger rolling diameter of the tires.

[MBZ] Jacking vehicle up to change ATF filter

2007-08-17 Thread Zoltan Finks
Okay, here's one of my famous basic questions:

Since I only really have the ability to jack up one end of the
vehicle, am I better off – in terms of maximum ATF drainage – jacking
up the front, or the rear of the vehicle? I'm assuming the rear is the
answer, but doesn't hurt to ask.

It doesn't matter, as you're dropping the pan, so the
angle won't matter.

Same with the torque converter.

If you jack up the rear you can check the differential oil level while
you're at it. (Always more pleasant when the fill hole is higher than
normal, so that it doesn't dribble all over as you remove the plug
[Actually I learned this lesson not from any Benzes but from my
Trooper (with four fill plugs to worry about on the bottom)]).

Since you have to remove the pan to change the filter (the filter really
MUST be changed with the ATF change) it doesn't matter, but the drain
plug is at the back and so I'd jack up the front of the car.

Well, I suppose I was going to use a jack stand at least. That's about
the best I can do.

Also, yes, I was referring to doing a filter change. I just didn't

somewhere in the tranny if the car was tilted one way versus the

Jack the front, there are brakes on the rear that work to stop the car
rolling off the 'singular' jack stand.
I would advise that all your affairs are sorted and a will is made out.
Don't forget to check your flex discs and steering linkages, may pay to
pull out the steering dampener and check it.

Not really, they are safety rated but if they have gone rusty..
Anyway, a while back I bought a pair of 5 tonne rated stands and they
are the ducks guts when compared to the pissy cheaper stands that I used

On the cheaper ones the car can be rocked a little bit but the car is
solid as rock on the 5 tonne ones.
However all this talk about axle stands is distracting the gun crowd
from their little discussion.

Correct, just because something left the factory rated that way doesn't
mean environmental conditions haven't weakened it. Also keep in mind that
the smaller jackstands can shift and move. Make sure they are all level, and
make sure they are in good condition before proceeding underneath.

Lifted 4x4 300TDs are fine to crawl underneath, but if a 300SD comes off a
jackstand on you, you are GOING to have a bad day. Also wise to make sure
you have someone that can hear you scream in case it falls on you, provided
you survive the initial THWACK.

Wow. I didn't think it was that uncommon to lie underneath a vehicle
whilst it is jacked up and jack-standed. I spent much of my teen years
doing that. And in the desert on the ground at night it was
particularly unnerving to become aware of a Tarantula crawling toward
you under the car. Your head kinda bounces between the undercarriage
and the ground a few times before you drag yourself out from
underneath the car.

Then it's time for the either the WD40 or the carb cleaner and a lighter. Poof.
