I like the empirical method.  Swap in another speedo, observe and react
accordingly.

I'm probably wrong but it is my understanding that things can't be 
lubricated.


Can, and have been.  I had a 'shrieker' that responded well
to lubricating the bearing in the head.

I don't remember, actually.  But you can lube them,
and except on a 107 (which mine was) they're fairly
easy to get out so it couldn't hurt.
