Yeah. That was what I thought when I saw it but I had that problem many
years ago on the Chevy and when I took the tank out it was slimy though
pretty easy to get out. This stuff is not gummy or slimy. It was more
like crumbly rubber particles. My thought is that it may be the remnants
of an older attack that was treated and this is what is left. The light
has never worked as long as I have had the car, about 4 years now. Still
I do need to take the tank out and clean it as I don't like the idea of
all that stuff down there. Will probably order a new filter screen to
put in there when I do it.

That crud is algae residue. Your tank probably has similar crud
in the bottom of it. Time for some biocide and a few fuel filters
in the trunk?

Re: [MBZ] Lonesome

No, I'm actually here. You are there. :-)
But anyway. I went and fixed the reserve light on my 300D yesterday.
Always wondered why it didn't come on no matter how long I waited to
fill the tank. I figure I must have been running on fumes more then
once. Finally decided to check it out and found the wiring was fine and
it must be the contacts in the sender. Easy to get to just take out the
first aid box and then unscrew the sender from the top of the tank. Oh
stopped by the dealer the afternoon before to get a new O-ring to reseal
the hole when I put it back in. Took quite a while for the fuel to drain
out of the tube as the tank was about full. The tube was pretty easy to
take apart. And I found that the problem was a rather deep collection of
black crud in the bottom of the tube that covered the contacts and
prevented the float making contact. Cleaned it all out and checked the
results. Put it back together and the light works with the float on the
bottom. Put the tube back in, total time about an hour of very light work.
So there you have it. About the same amount of difficulty as replacing a
sealed beam headlight bulb.

BTW, 'think SWMBO's brother and wife have gone to Iowa City for few days to

It doesn't show Sioux County; too far west, I expect. According to the
National Weather Service, Spencer, IA, is supposed to get 9 inches of snow
tonight and two tomorrow. They say you are supposed to get one inch
tonight and 3 - 7 tomorrow. A significant difference for not that much
distance (117 miles on roads).
