Re: [MBZ] Lots of crack smoked

2016-06-23 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
What's your secret to bringing back chalky white paint? I have a 92 F-150. It
is two-tone like so many ford trucks were at that time. Mine is white with the
red on the side. The red is okay (needs some elbow grease and a little
compounding), but the white is really chalky. Of course, it always sits
outside instead of in the garage. It rarely gets used except to pick up some
large item from an estate sale or to haul bed load of tree-limbs or mulch, etc.
I may actually sell it one of these days. I don't need three cars (4 with my
wife's car and soon to be 5 with my stepdaughter turning 16 soon).

Neither white nor the 040 black got clear coats. They were both single stage
paints.

I’ve petty much resigned myself to never buying a car with a clear coat (older
car, that is.) If it’s got a single stage paint I can almost always make it
pretty again. Or at least presentable.

My 1985 300TD in Diamond Blue has a clear coat - same as factory. No
problem since it sits in the garage.

2016-06-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Interesting. I have never seen a clearcoat on an MB single stage paint that I
know of. They used a lot of clear on the metallics in the early to mid 1980s,
as there were failure issues with it big time. When I was first down in
Florida in the late 1990s and looking for a nice W126 diesel I saw a lot of
failed clearcoats, especially on the trunk and roof of the cars. A number of
cars I looked at that were good had been repainted under warranty by the
dealers, so the failures had to be close to the time of purchase, I would think.

Re: [MBZ] Lots of crack smoked

2016-06-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Neither white nor the 040 black got clear coats. They were both single stage
paints.

I’ve petty much resigned myself to never buying a car with a clear coat (older
car, that is.) If it’s got a single stage paint I can almost always make it
pretty again. Or at least presentable.

Kaleb,
My 1980 300SD has clear coat, but my 1983 300D does not. Now the 300D did have
a rear end bump and the crazy shop put clear coat on the rear which now with
age does NOT match the front 3/4 of the car, plus its peeling off. Don't know
why the shop thought it had clear coat.

The price comes from the optional tow strap which is tucked under the
hood, pax side.

This is a "special option" for the 220D and apparently extremely

OK, I was having other issues. Ask the seller what's at the other end of
the strap.

Incidentally, 16" fell overnight with another 8-12" forecast for today,
maybe more. I'm heading outside shortly to measure the 24-hour local
accumulation (snow began at exactly 12:45 pm Friday). Send out the the St.

Re: [MBZ] Lots of crack

2016-01-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We've gotten exactly nothing. I've been out and hauled wood today. I'm also
draining old/bad gas out of a snowmobile. That machine runs good for a few
minutes if I clean the carb but then it farts and pops and has a bad time. I'm
hoping its just bad gas from the previous owner. I already had to rebuild the
fuel pump. Weird because it otherwise seems well maintained.

Bernards (carrying keglets of Courvoisier XO) if I don't report back in 6
hours.

This a.m. we actually got a little snow here in the Low Country, but it melted
as fast as it fell.

I would love to have lots of spare time delve into the fascinating email

my driveway?
