Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Problems Spreadsheet
Pls remember the audience this is being prepared for - usually someone writes in and asks what should I look out for in a late 80s 300SD? not normally I'm buying a 88.5 190Dt that is running funny - what might it be? (BTW, the 190Dt is made up for example's sake so don't write and say there's no such animal.) At least that's my perception. This needs to be kept simple (to minimize the amount of time needed) if I'm going to do it - it can grow and expand to cover and include more stuff but for now I need suggestions for setting up the structure so it can grow reasonably without needing to redesign it every few months. Also, pls keep the subject the same when suggesting things for the spreadsheet so I can send them to a special folder. Also - this will be a spreadsheet and not a database. Well, let me think about that - not sure I can put a Access DB where people can access it and while it might be easier in the long run all the variabilities may complicate things - Like having a 300D in 3 different chassis with different engines. May be easier to have a spreadsheet with a different sheet for each model year vehicle? Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Problems Spreadsheet
Hi Larry, Thanks for stepping forward and doing the work. Maybe a column that gives a rough idea of when many of these problems start to show up. eg, valve guides start to go at 200,000, tanny at 250,000. Again, I know these are general mileage suggestions, and vary with the driver, but from reading the list, I do often see similar problems being talked about on cars with similar mileage. And as you say, the ppl who will use this list are looking for a snap shot of a car and what to look for with a certain model. Just saying a car has valve guide weaknesses would leave more questions. Do the wear just beyond warrranty, or at 300,000. Some would say wearing at 300,000 isn't even an issue, just what happens to old engines. Thanks again Larry. Hi Luther, So are you saying year and badge should be the primary sort? [MBZ] Mercedes Problems Spreadsheet
Howdy - I finally got around to creating a first draft of what we discussed a month or 2 ago - a spreadsheet with things to look for when considering another MB - so we don't go over the same ground again and again on the email list and risk forgetting something. This is only a first draft so I need lots of input to tell me what should be included and how it should look. I also need to know chassis #s and model designations along with problems naturally. For instance, I put 240D 300D in the W123 model column - but I know there were wagins but don;t recall the exact nomenclature. 300TD maybe? Same for the W124, and all the others - but the most imortant part will be describing problems areas - like the biodegradable wiring harnesses in 140s, all that stuff. Take a look - let me know what to change - http://members.rennlist.com/l_turner(it's been running slow tonight) (I will change that LTurner title to something like Mercedes in a little while - it's been a while since I created one of the websites and it plugged my name in before I realized it.) You need to delimit by year. For example, the 240D from 74 through 76 was a 115 body, not a 123 body. The 300D was also a 115 body for one year - 1976. The 300D has the honor of being three different body styles in the US: 115, 123, and 124. I think it might be the front runner in the ambiguity sweepstakes. The letter/digit marque is not very reliable, the body model number is much safer to use as a database key. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

In the rest of the world, the 200D has been in many bodies: 110, 114/115, 123, and maybe more, like the 124. There have been lots of 230, 250 and 280 gassers also. 230s and 250s come in 4 and 6 cyl versions also. the 110/111 6 cyl M180 is a 230, the /8 230 was a 4 cyl variant. The 300D has the honor of being three different body styles in the US: 115, 123, and 124. I think it might be the front runner in the ambiguity sweepstakes. The letter/digit marque is not very reliable, the body model number is much safer to use as a database key. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com Loren Faeth ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Problems Spreadsheet
The answer is to delimit by body / engine. This way, chassis trim issues can be addressed by body then drive line issues can be addressed by engine. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Problems Spreadsheet
It's a work in progress but would do well being a wiki. Spose under W220 we could write: rusteverywhere. Hendrik Tom Hargrave wrote: You need to delimit by year. Then you had the non-turbo turbo 300D's.
