According to VIN, the original color was CAVANSITE BLUE METALLIC which you can 
still see inside the door frames, so this looks like a wrap that could probably 
be removed if you wanted this car which is at least $5,000 overpriced according 
to KBB.

orange/bronze/copper colored Gwagen coming the other way toward me.  I

Once upon a time, I was mulling over getting a junker 116 300SD, painting
it red with black Iron Crosses, rigging a regular crash helmet with a point
on it and entering a demolition derby as the Red Baron...

The piece de resistance, of course, would be rigging an exhaust pipe
through the hood with a semi-style exhaust stack, complete with little
flipper lid on it.

I decided to go with both options.  Having a massive black hood would have been 
excessive to my eye.  I used a Battleship grey for the bulk of the hood, and a 
black matte 16 racing stripe down the center.  The glare is now gone.  

I am thinking I should add a few logos to the side fender.  Show the demise of 
Frod, chebby, moopar, and other marques

I was thinking that too.  But it may be too much of a deviation from the 
gleaming silver on the rest of the  car.  

Is the black matte an aviation solution?  I would be happy to have a really 
good technical reason to support that solution instead of going matte grey

I have to wonder if it looks better in person.

I often see vehicles that leave me wondering what the owner was thinking 
but I tell myself that it is a good thing that they are involved in the 
hobby and that it is not up to me to decide how someone else's custom 
car looks. My son and I go to car shows and it is sometimes hard to 
believe what people build. They spend 10's of thousands of dollars to 
build their dream and more often than not, they have wasted their time, 
effort and money because they have built a monstrosity. Sometimes, I 
wonder if they even run.


My son works in a shop that builds custom hot rods and has a different 
view than I do as to what is desirable. He thinks thousand horse twin 
turbo LS motors are cool. I think it is a waste of effort. I don't care 
if I ever see another big block Camaro.


I am somewhat drawn to rat rods. Some don't look safe to be in but it is 
truly amazing what people can cobble together. There is one around here 
that is a sort of an old truck body with an exposed engine and a grill 
from some other truck etc. It has a flat head engine from an old 
Lincoln. A V12 which I had no idea existed until just a few years ago.


In any event, I am a somewhat frugal sort and cannot help but think 
about fuel mileage when I look at some of these hot rods. Power is nice 
but mileage is generally more important to me. Hence, the interest in 
old diesel Mercedes.

I was having a summer daydream yesterday looking at Jeeps. There are many I 
immediately skip by thinking dorked out meaning its jacked up and painted 
neon green. Why are so many Jeeps painted neon green?
I was surprised how reasonably I could get a decent CJ5 that wasn't dorked out. 
A CJ7 in reasonable shape is around $9000, a CJ5 is only around $6000. Thats 
one with no rust that runs and drives with a nice interior...
I don't think I'm really going to get one any time in the near future. If the 
company stock keeps going up maybe next year I'll invest in another bay for my 
garage which would give me some toy keeping space which would allow for 
something like a toy Jeep to stay out of the weather. I'd love to build a CJ3b 
or CJ5 with the engine from my Jetta. Stage 2 chip in the engine with upgraded 
injectors should make 120hp, 288lb/ft. With a 5spd it'd be a pretty fun ride. 
Have to gear it appropriately of course and a CJ5 would be much more 
street-able. 31 tires, selectable locker front and rear for real offroad 
performance... Ahh the summer daydream, even if it is only springtime.

Isn't that about what a real one would be worth?

If the engine is the 2.2l its actually a good little engine. Angie had a Dodge 
Lancer with that engine and other than the fact that the car was garbage and 
rotting all around it it as a good engine, lots of power, reasonable gas 
mileage.
