You must have a different trouble shooting manual.

It would seem that since the resistor unit, the fan, the temperature
control unit, the fan control unit, the pushbutton unit, and the
compressor are all disconnected; that I shouldn't get any heavy
current flow at the fuse terminal, and I should get zero resistance
between the listed ground wires to a frame or body ground.

Yep, that should do it. Nothing much left but wires in the chassis
at that point. Except for the sensors and vacuum actuators. Oh, and
the Klima relay perhaps. (Not exactly sure if your car has one. Too
many cars...) You could run the checklist I have:

http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/mamerepairs.html

Though it's fairly weak for that particular system. Like I said, I've
only had PB problems on my cars with that system, so that's all I've
really covered. (As I learn things on broken cars I amend that page.)

If the Klima is the little plug-in relay that sits on top of the left front
wheel well, then I have one. It's under a plastic snap-on cover with the
relay that runs the A/C auxiliary fan. I'll unplug both of them before
doing the recheck.

That checklist is very useful.

What I think happened was that I hit two buttons simultaneously and
caused a big short in the pushbutton unit, but who knows?

No, that won't do it. The ACC manual even details what happens
in various multiple-button situations. No harm, just odd behavior.

You must have a different trouble shooting manual. I can't find any
troubleshooting in this one other than the basic use of the ammeter,
voltmeter, and resistance circuit testing unless I missed it somehow. This
one is SM (service manual?) 1243 (rev. 7-85).
If what you describe is on the disc, I've got to hunt for it. It may be in
the shop.
It would seem that since the resistor unit, the fan, the temperature control
unit, the fan control unit, the pushbuttton unit, and the compressor are all
disconnected; that I shouldn't get any heavy current flow at the fuse
terminal, and I should get zero resisitance between the listed ground wires
to a frame or body ground.

I've checked all that but I'll check it again.

From: Jim Cathey

This is going to be a puckery situation when I fire up the restored
system the first time since nothing on the MB electrical repair manual
checks out on resistance, ground, or hot versus wire number.

You can remove the blower speed regulator and apply +12V to the
correct succession of pins on its connector and see that the blower
motor responds correctly. It is unlikely that they died, given the
tough nature of their job. They rarely fail, in other words.
You'll need the ACC schematic to do this. It's the sort of thing
I'd have on my repair/diagnosis checklist, except that I never
worked it out because the blower speed regulator was not bad
on any car I worked on.
-- Jim
--
The repair manual shows the pin numbers and where "some" of them go to but I
haven't found any schematics for the solid state motor speed control unit.
The schematic only shows the pin numbers, and then you look up whichever
solid state unit; blower, or resistor unit you're interested in. Think I'll
do some more checking, especially the ground pins, because the resistance
pin to ground did not show a dead short like it would seem it should.
Fortunately the blower didn't get damaged.

Thanks,
Gerry

The troubleshooting manual shows: Models 300D/CD/TD for Model years
1983-1985.
I took the resistor unit off and found the following part numbers and looked
them up on Rustys catalog:

000 821 2760
05 8009 30
 60
Wow! Didn't know they cost that much. You'd probably better hang on to
yours, Chris. I've read about several instances of them failing. Mine is
"probably" okay. I didn't get the exact same resistances on the different
coils as shown in the manual but they were close, there were no open coils,
and there were no shorts. Probably safe enough to try it. What I think
happened was that I hit two buttons simultaneously and caused a big short in
the pushbutton unit, but who knows?

Do these things fail often? I don't think they do...

[MBZ] Need resistor unit for fan on '83 300D Turbo

2009-03-11 Thread Archer
I put a request for a resistor assembly for the blower on an '83 300D Turbo
on the bottom of someone elses request for parts and that was probably a
mistake, so here's the request again:

I need the resistor unit which is inside a cage and sits on the right wheel
well under the hood on an '83 300D Turbo.
This works with the solid state blower speed control module above the glove
box.
I initially thought that only the solid state modules; pushbutton, heat
control module, and blower speed control module; were all that got fried
when everything shorted out on the climate control system; but I'm now
thinking I ought to replace the resistor module as well just to be on the
safe side. (I've already found the solid state replacement units.)

This is going to be a puckery situation when I fire up the restored system
the first time since nothing on the MB electrical repair manual checks out
on resistance, ground, or hot versus wire number. I'm still playing with it
and trying to make heads or tails of it, but there are something like 30+
wires going to plugs on the four units.

I can send you a check, money order, or pay you via paypal.
Thanks,
Gerry
