The new Passat premium got a super favorable review from Warren Brown in
the Sunday Post.  He's going to test drive and write up the diesel version
when he gets his hands on one.

I am not overly confident in the timing belt setup.
A diesel shouldn't have that. TB's are OK for non-interference engines.
Recommended replacement 80 - 100 k, $ 800 parts + special tools + labor.

Anyone know anything about the current crop of new VW Diesels? Are the
engines/trannys any good? It looks like you can buy at least two if them
for less than a new E class CDI.

Only thing I didn't like about the "new" Beetle I drove was visibility of
the corners of the car.  Seemed it would be very easy to bump into things
guessing exactly where they are.  I guess that is why I see so many dinged
up bumpers on them.
