In my dotage, I thought that a Google Earth look at my last UK abode 
would be interesting.


I found "our" cottage in Henley-on Thames and Lo! and Behold! the 
current owner is a Mercedes driver!


I left 50 years ago and at that time the "Fair MIle" was mostly 
tree-less, not so anymore.


Lots more houses too.

in the country were not numbered on a street.

Everyone knew who lived where, so naming the house, cottage, manse etc. was a 
conventional way of indicating which home belonged to whom.

So Fred, maybe you can explain why it’s common for homes to be “named” in the 
UK? Was that a means of identifying the location prior to things like mail 
codes?

In my dotage, I thought that a Google Earth look at my last UK abode would be 
interesting.

I found "our" cottage in Henley-on Thames and Lo! and Behold! the current owner 
is a Mercedes driver!

I left 50 years ago and at that time the "Fair MIle" was mostly tree-less, not 
so anymore.
