Re: [MBZ] OT: Buying a car in WA
Simply put you can't make those kind of blanket statements with any kind of assuredness. Here in MA driving without plates will get you pulled over, the car towed and impounded and a hefty fine. MA also doesn't recognize temp plates from ANY state. When I bought Hammie I was going to get NJ temp plates to drive home on but my insurance company wouldn't insure me. I checked with the state and sure enough they're illegal. I asked about other states and technically speaking the state doesn't recognize them. In practice I've seen lots of cars with temp plates so I guess thats something they don't really enforce. -Curt Date: Sat, 14 Jan 2006 20:09:07 -0600 From: Kaleb C. I'm sure that if one were to take it to the Supremes the faith-and-credit clause of the constitution would win the day. That is, so long as _your_ state is OK with the type of temporary licensing you did then any state you are traveling through is required to be. And good luck with that fight! In practice I'm sure they have arranged it to be so painful and fogged with FUD that everybody pays _extra_ fees just to avoid trouble. WA's trip permit seems very sensible. Good for three days or so, at a relatively modest fee. Certainly nothing anybody would want to do for very long, the regular license is cheaper by far (per hour). -- Jim

Is it necessary to have a temporary permit to drive a newly-purchased car home, in WA? In MI, where I used to live, it's legal to drive without a plate to the first place of storage, but I can't find any info on whether that's legal here.
Re: [MBZ] OT: Buying a car in WA
AFAIK, you can never drive here in WA without either some visible plates or a temp permit. You must also be able to provide proof of insurance should you be pulled over. A Trip Permit is required but is good only in the State of WA. Other States issue a permit that is valid in all States. I was advised to stop in OR and obtain another permit as I headed South to CA. At least that is the way it was 4 years ago. WA always needs to be a little different. WA sells temporary permits, so ipso facto it's not legal to drive without a license of some sort. But so far as I know you only need the temp permits for something that doesn't already have some valid license in some state. That is, a driver that you just bought is fine. The reason I asked is it's frustratingly difficult to find out what *is* required to be legal. The DOL website has almost nothing; they seem to assume you'll be buying from a dealer. I can't find anything on the website about whether a temporary permit is required or even available. In Michigan temporary permits were available but weren't needed for the initial trip to where you were going to store the car, only after.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Buying a car in WA
Most states you just go to the motor vehicle dept with copy of your current insurance card( it's good on new purchase for 10 days, if you really want to impress them, get the new cars VIN# and get it on your insurance ahead of time and have them fax you a card for the car, it makes things go very smooth. I've done this buying a few vehicles in different states ) and buy a drive away permit. It's been a few years since I lived in WA and had to deal with the gestapo there, but those cops had absolutely no sense of humor. When I moved up there, first day before even getting the furniture unloaded, i got pulled over for out of state tags and run through a serious ringer ( and heavily fined for having out of state plates because they ran utility records and found I had power in my name in WA...heck, I hadn't even moved in yet ) . You don't want to attract those guys attention. Probably have to call the vehicle dept direct to get the info , doesn't hurt to call twice and talk to two different people so you can figure out what they are forgetting to tell you. Re: [MBZ] OT: Buying a car in WA
The problem with getting the insurance ahead of time is that if you show up and the car is a POS and you dont buy it, then you have to cancel the insurance. In OK and many other states Im sure if you buy insurance on a car then cancel it within 6 months or so, the state will suspend your license. Then in order to unsuspend it you have to send them proof you either didnt buy the car or sold it. Its a pain. Its supposed to stop people from buying cars, getting insurance to obtain a tag, then cancel the insurance after they have the tag. It ends up getting more innocent people though.
