Yes, OSX *is* UNIX as described by the Open Group, owners of the UNIX
trademark. In fact, Linux is *not* UNIX as it has never been submitted for
certification. Neither is any of the open BSD systems.

OSX 10.5
OSX 10.6
AIX 5L
AIX 6
Solaris 10
HP-UX 11

This is UNIX 03 certified, and capable of using the UNIX trademark in
branding and advertising. Note, OSX 10.7 has not yet been submitted for UNIX
certification, so technically Lion is *not* UNIX either. :)

That's not a major issue - I have an iMac G5 that runs Leopard and an Xserve G5
dual processor with a 5TB Xserve RAID that runs Leopard Server.  Both are very
functional machines and play quite nice with my machines running Snow Leopard
(OSX 10.6).  No issues with apps, either.

Macs may cost more but tend to have higher user satisfaction. I've been
issued some pretty Windows laptops at work made by Dell and HP but they were
thicker and came with physically massive power supplies that I wouldn't want
to carry around very often. My most recent work laptop was a HP that had a
fan on the side that would make my coffee warm but would heat up any cold
drinks. Never had that kind of problem with my MacBook!

Mac OSX is really NEXTSTEP, so you're right, the unix utilities don't
understand some of the old "classic" MacOS oddities like resource forks.

I thought I heard that they finally did away with resource forks in Lion or
maybe even Leopard.

I copy files using 'cp' all the time, I find it much easier than using the
Finder and have NEVER had an issue or complaint about resource forks one way or
the other.

I have long been an advocate of Apple's refurbs. My 15" MacBookPro is a refurb
that I bought for several hundred (if not more) off the new price.

You can buy a previous generation machine as a refurb and save a substantial
amount of coin in the process.

Only difference with a refurb from a new is the packaging. A refurb comes in a
plain cardboard box rather than retail packaging. Other than that, everything
is exactly the same as a new machine. Same accessories, inserts, cables, etc.

And refurbs are treated as new equipment, so they have the same warranty and
are eligible for AppleCare as well.

As both my MBP and 20" iMac are only CoreDuo processors, I will probably be
looking to buy replacements in the next year or so. Those will be refurbs when
the time comes, too.

2011-09-02 Thread Curt Raymond
Did you price a Dell Precision? The 4600 which replaced my 4300 STARTS at
$1700. A $500 laptop is consumer grade, it will not relate quality-wise to your
Mac in any substantial way. The cheapest Mac now starts at $1200 you should use
that as your guide.

HP shows an HP ProBook 4530s Notebook PC for $539 which is listed
under "small business solutions", and 4 docking stations that range from
$85 to $137. I suppose that laptop would work with any of them.
Having an external on-off switch would be an advantage.

Of course computers made by apple are personal computers. However
the MS/DOS (later wintel) crowd claimed "Personal computer" to mean a
MS/DOS machine upon the release of the IBM PC almost 30 years ago.

Even Apple acquiesced to the terminology in their Mac vs PC ads a few
years ago.

unfortunate, but that is the way it is. "PC" means "M$" or "M$ or
*nix" Mac means any PC running the Mac os.

If you are running *nix on a mac platform, then you are left out of
the industry terminology, so you have to say "*nix running on a mac"
to describe yourself.

Kind of like "is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?"

Nobody has mentions Panasonic Toughbooks yet...
http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/laptop-computers.asp

Certainly not the fastest, but it's hard to find any tougher.
Their semi-rugged are pretty sturdy, but thefully-ruggedized are
nearly indestructible.

Try putting anything but a fully rugged laptop in a rain storm,
for half an hour, running, with the lid open.

I've purchased a couple semi-rugged ones from Bob Johnson's
Computer Stuff.
http://www.bobjohnson.com/

Panasonic isn't the only maker, but there seem to be more of
them so used ones are easier (and cheaper) to find.

As Ed mentioned, my '02 Dell C840 has a docking station and the power-on

My idea of a desktop replacement computer:

You have a rack that holds the laptop on edge behind your monitor, taking up
little desk space.

You put it in the rack and plug in a power cord, usb hub, and HDMI cable.
You turn it on by hitting a switch on the outside of the laptop, not by lifting

The new high line consumer HPs (dv6, dv7) have a tool free access hatch.
Memory, hard drive, network card, etc are under the hatch. Shove the battery

Dell has consistency problems, seems like a lot of component failures
in the first few months (probably only 1% but I hear about a lot of
them). That said, once a laptop is working well it seems to work well
for a long time, and the vast majority of our Dells are retired for
performance rather than failure reasons.

Unfortunately I don't know how their end-user support is, all of my
personal Dells - including the refurbs - have worked fine through the
warranty period.

desktops
were regularly. Not sure if that's coincidence or that laptops are

Transients thrive on antennae. Laptops, being compact and all
wired together to begin with, have less of 'em. Also, since the
things are all-in-one they are designed and tested to work together,
which means that they pass government-mandated EMI tests. And EMI
is the flip side of transient susceptibility, so if you fix one
you're nearly automatically in a better position for the other.

Desktops, being all strung out and filled with crap made by everybody
and his dog, are going to suffer by comparison. Of course, you _can_
make a desktop computer that is largely immune to transients. We
used to, you could turn up the ESD machine to the point it was
pitting craters in the paint on our gear and it didn't even blink.

That was awhile ago, those machines could run CP/M, though that's
not what they ran when our customers were using them. I have no idea
where one might be found now, except for one of the monitors that I
just saw being used as a prop in the arctic ride waiting room at
SeaWorld in San Diego!

Re: [MBZ] OT: Computer reliability

2011-08-31 Thread Gerry Archer

The physical layout in the computer area makes changing laptops a pain.
I've used PCs since before windows (for about 16 years) such that they've
become second nature. I can see that after I've learned the Apple system
as well as I know PC/Windows, I'll like it better since it has many
advantages

such as being faster and more intuitive than Windows.
Apple, of course, does not have the installed base that Windows has; and
that
creates problems when trying to solve various glitches that arise. For
example,

I installed Snow Leopard and mail had problems. Isp couldn't help.
Wiped the hd and installed Leopard 10.5xx that came with the Mac which
helped

but still couldn't receive mail.
After talking to four techs at the isp, the last one finally transferred me
to someone

who knew Apple and he solved the problem in about five minutes.

In general, I get along well on both the PC and the Mac and I'm even
beginning to
figure out Linux. Sort of a hobby after one retires, but a "slow" hobby
since one

doesn't learn as fast as when one is younger.

I do carry the Macbook when I go out and like its thinness, smaller size,
and less
weight. My Macbook has built in wifi which works better than the PC at
hotspots

such as restaurants and airline terminals.

This Macbook probably doesn't have Thunderbolt since it's 2 years old, but
it
sounds like it would be considerable advantage for one using it as a
desktop.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Computer reliability

2011-08-31 Thread Brian Toscano
Why would plugging and unplugging it be a pain? I've used my MacBook Pro
for almost 4 years for software development and movies, music, etc. They
are thinner than many Windows laptop making it easy to carry. The power
supplies are small with long cords or you can change the cord to a 2-blade
connector and the power connection on the laptop side is magnetic so if you
trip over the cord your laptop doesn't go flying. Apple also sells an
Airport Express WiFi adapter that is the same size as the power supply. I
usually carry one of these with me too. That way if I'm at someone's house
and they can't remember the password or whatever I'll ask if I can connect
my wifi to their router. All of this is vastly more comfortable to carry
than my last work issued Dell or Compaq machines. The newer Mac's have
Thunderbolt which is basically puts PCI bus on an external cable and one
cable can connect the monitor, any keyboards, mice, hard drives, etc.

Slave cylinder is easy, you just need to know if you've got the old type or new
and get a new gasket with it.

Which reminds me I bought a new gasket for mine...

The clutch master cylinder and its rod on the other hand, thats a completely
different story...

Win blows partition on the Dell mackintosh kacked, taking the OSx setup data
with it. Not sure how. Decided to just get a Mac pro that will do lion out of
the box. No sinking around with unix drivers for non standard hardware to get
minimal functionality

Yeahbut Andrew asked this question on the 18th. Allen, Dan and I responded
exactly the same way we have today... I think its reasonable to expect Andrew
to remember asking his own dang question, especially after 3 of us answered the
same.

Of course today I see the reality is that he didn't like our answers...

A cheap battery will give cheap results.

About 2 years ago the battery in my Dell failed. I got an inexpensive
replacement (Dell wanted ~$150, the inexpensive replacement was about $80) the
replacement lasted about 9 months before it inexplicably failed completely.
Ended up buying a full price replacement...

You pays your money and you takes your chance.

The OWC NuPower is $99 vs. 129 for an Apple battery (same specs.), which is
more than I want to spend. What about this for about half the price from
Batteryedge?

It has been my experience that the third party batteries (other than OWC's)
have serious fit and finish issues.

If you are willing to risk it, go ahead. Since the battery is an integral part
of the computer case, I wouldn't, but that's a personal preference.

There was a whole discussion on this last week, or the week before, but
I forget what the source was.

OWC (Other World Computing).

Their house brand replacements (Nupower) are very good.

Before you toss the battery or buy a new one, go to Apple's support site and
read up on how to condition a battery. You may be able to resurrect it somewhat.

More info if you need it - just ask.

Oh, and the defective battery (one of its four) has been
replaced. Live, so that I wouldn't incur an unnecessary
reboot! There have been no power failure reboots in the
year since.

[MBZ] OT: Computer reliability

I was just checking my records, and this 233 MHz Mac G3
has been rebooted 7 times in the two years that it has
resided in my new computer room. It normally runs 24/7,

Four power failures where the UPS was inadequate to

stuck and un-dismountable during a Toast burning session.
