of New Brunswick, N.J., is a secured card with a $59 annual fee, higher

to fork over $140 just to have access to money they put on deposit with
 the
bank to back their spending on the card. It's basically like paying money
 for access to your money.

Millennium card also has no grace period, meaning a 19.5% interest rate on
charges kicks in as soon as a charge is made. That's unheard of, Arnold
says. The account is secured with the borrower's own money. There's no
 risk
 for the issuer.

However, you have much less protection when you use a
debit card than when you use a credit card.

This topic came up on the local news just the other day. Credit cards have
more fraud protection than debit cards. Most likely, if someone somehow
steals your card or gets the number and drains your account, you'll have to
pay for it. According to the report, it's just the opposite with a credit
card due to the level of protection offered. Also, fringe benefits such as
free or cheaper extended warranties and buyer's protection insurance only
come with a credit card.

That's correct, although the networks (Visa, M/C) do voluntarily give
some of the protections to debit cards, at least if you process the
charge in the manner that runs it though them (signature, not PIN).
Another reason to use credit cards, besides warranty and chargebacks,
is that credit card companies pay me a couple thousand a year and
I'm not eager to give that up. (signup bonuses, 2-5% cash back on
purchases, 0% interest loans sitting in high yield savings for a year)

Sears Mastercard will automatically put your account in a revolving balance if
you do not pay the balance in full. That means that if you make the minimum

paying interest on any purchases made after you made the full payment until the

company, and that is only because I didn't have a $75K balance in my
checking account when I purchased this house. I have no credit cards. I
use a debit card. If there isn't money in the bank, I don't buy it.

Good ideas there. However, you have much less protection when you use a
debit card than when you use a credit card. I can't rattle off the
particulars, but they are noticable.

I live in Jefferson, Iowa. I use the debit card at the ATM and for PayPal.
It isn't like I am back in NYC or DC! :-)

We live in entirely different economic environments. I buy diesel (and,
regrettably, gas for Debbie's Buick) on the debit card. I buy groceries on
the debit card. I do PayPal for eBay on the debit card. Other than that, I
take money out of the ATM and pull out some $20s.

About the only reason I can think of to have a credit card is to rent a car.
Last time I rented a car was in 1995, when I flew to Indy to give Debbie her
engagement ring.

Story here: http://don.homelinux.net/~don/debdon.html

Call me, if you will, a former/reformed Yuppie who decided that Visa was
only Satan trying to screw me over. Personally, I think every credit card VP
should be taken out and shot as a war criminal. These are the folks who have
fu**ed over our economy while they got rich on corporate bonuses.

For me, it is a cash economy. If I can't pay for it today, I ain't buying
it.

I didn't say you should use credit cards for the credit they can provide.
You can use them as if they were debit cards -- which is really the only
way they should be used.

I use a credit card but pay my bill off every month.
