Re: [MBZ] OT: I hate plumbing

2023-08-02 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Or the reverse. My F150 and my son's F150 both leak coolant when cold.
In winter, the level drops and I have to keep an eye on the tank. My son
is a mechanic and he has determined that it is likely an O ring that
seals a slip on fitting. He has acquired the part to repair his truck
and will do mine after he has done his own. It is not pressing at the
moment because it does not appear to leak in the summer. In winter, it
leaks a bit when the engine is first started but seals once things warm up.

may not ever drip on the ground, as it just steams off immediately.

If you can't spot any signs of a leak, maybe the pressure cap is a bit weak or
not sealing properly?

I have to add a pint or two of coolant to several of my cars every six months
or so. I just do that as it's easier than trying to chase down every tiny leak
to get a perfectly sealed system. I try to remember to eyeball all the fluid
levels whenever I get fuel.

A slow enough leak will evaporate before it drips off. One might see
dried residue, etc. Or UV fluorescence if dye-marked.

Definitely the “mechanics” at the Mercedes dealerships. I mentioned a while
back that the dealership claimed that my mother’s G500 needed a new ecu which
was NLA and they suggested that it get written off as a total loss. Well, I
took it to an independent shop which spent 5 hours on it and got it running.
All they did was clean up some relays and fuses. How about that for dealership
incompetence.

I know. Part of the issue is that the art of plumbing is dying. No skill
involved in pulling a trigger on a crimping machine. Now they need that
expensive Milwaukee tool when they could just use a cheap propane torch and
some solder. Everything has to be over complicated now, including cars. On

According to oldest son, while some old school plumbers still like sweating
copper, these are very popular in the trade. He says they're quite substantial
and he's never seen one leak unless it was improperly installed.

I can see the advantages of those, but seems somewhat like a "sharkbite" in
that it relies on an O-ring to make the seal, which will eventually start to
leak years later. But I've had sweated copper joints eventually leak also, so I
don't think anything is really permanent when it comes to household plumbing.

Blowtorches like that Turner are what plumbers used to solder fittings, before
bottled propane was widely available. My dad always called them a plumbers
blowtorch; his father was a plumber (among other crafts) and had several.

I've got a variety of liquid fueled torches. I can't remember if this little
guy burns alcohol or gasoline: https://photos.app.goo.gl/QikswMykEiNpxjT78
I don't know what you'd use it for either but its kind of fun.

This one is a Turner, it burns kerosene:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/9T8EshvpTqLzao6L6
I suppose it'd probably burn gasoline too.
It won't explode I don't think. There is a ring around the pump that has solder
filled holes, if it gets too hot or too much pressure that ring will blow out.
Mine must have gotten too hot before I got it, I had to spend a bunch of time
carefully flowing some new solder into the holes...

Looks more impressive/frightening while preheating:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/FtcowU7YFjGBGiU98

Sounds pretty good too: https://photos.app.goo.gl/EM9Pq9PJDQ78a7sFA

Re: [MBZ] OT: I hate plumbing

2023-07-31 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
That sounds like PEX A which is stretched over the fitting and held on with
another ring of (formerly stretched) PEX. I've wondered if that would be an
issue. They SAY PEX wants to return to it's original shape but I've wondered.

PEX B gets held on with a metal ring. I used copper because I like the look of
the copper better than the stainless steel. It's also easier to get the copper
off if you make a mistake. I'm well aware of my ability to make mistakes...

PVC pipes get brittle as they age also.

Copper and soldered joints can corrode.

No such thing as "permanent" plumbing at least not for what most people would
be able to afford.

If PEX is good for domestic hot water (usually hotter than 110F) I would think
it would be good for warm ambient temps. But probably not forever.

I agree in not trusting sharkbite fittings. Sadly it's probably one of those
things where 99% of the time they work fine but I don't want to be in the 1%.
I MIGHT use one as a "get by" solution. Leaky pipe, don't have time to do a
proper fix today? Slap on a sharkbite and fix later, but not long term.

A couple years ago I replaced a bunch of the copper pipes in our house with new
copper. Then last year I did the house up north with PEX, I'll never do copper
again. Especially after this year I had to cut some of the PEX out of the house
up north and discovered that I hadn't gotten all of the water out. It had
frozen and hadn't damaged anything. I'm sold...

Yes if I ever need to re-plumb a house I will be using PEX.

Brother-in-Law is a fan of the "Sharkbite" fittings but they cost a lot and I
don't really trust them long term compared to a properly cemented or soldered
connection, their claims notwithstanding. I know a lot of "handyman" types use
them because it saves time and the customer is paying for the fitting so they
don't care.

Run water through the pipe to the appliance with the largest valve and
the bread will be ripped apart and the pieces will come out with the
water.

Stuff a piece of bread in the dripping pipe, wipe the pipe dry, and go
for it.

[MBZ] OT: I hate plumbing

2023-07-29 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I really, really, really hate plumbing.

Need to install a T fitting on a line in the basement. Shut the water off,
opened the upstairs taps, opened the downstairs outside faucet (lowest drain
point in the house). Cut the pipe for the fitting, waiting like an hour now and
it's still dripping. PVC so it needs to be dry to cement it.
