Re: [MBZ] OT-Standalone hard drive
I got a cheap chinese external case on ebay for $10 and dropped a 80 gig ATA laptop drive in it. It is USB 2.0 and needs two ports to supply power as well as data. Works just fine. Seems a bit expensive for that wallyworld drive and I have no idea what the OS is for. clay On 30 Apr 2008, at 03:06, archer wrote: > A major hard drive mfg is selling a standalone unit that supposedly > works > like an internal hard drive complete with its own OS. Many drive cases use a two-tailed plug -- USB ports are limited to 500mA, and you may need more, hence the two plugs for 1A. I just now checked Seagates and Walmarts websites. Neither listed that hard drive. Seagate may be test marketing it in out-of-the-way Walmarts like the ones out here in the backwoods. Re: [MBZ] OT-Standalone hard drive
Yup. Flash drives with a stripped down OS running minimal versions of common buisness software. Don't know the utility of the software as it will not run on a Mac, but flash drives are great, I have a couple and use them to transfer things like software updates and other large files between my computers. I don't know what the max size is these days, but 16 GB ones are reasonable (less that $50 retail), larger ones are probably more. Maybe the two USB connections are for hooking up additional external hard drives? Also, a friend recently bought a 2.5" based external harddrive, and it has lots of built-in tools and functionality on the hard drive (like those stupid U3 flash drives). It would install a CD-ROM drive and use the autostart facility in windows to launch their toolset. You could also access the HDD traditionally... Since it was based on a 2.5" laptop hard drive, it only requires 1 amp at 5V to run. The USB spec gives a max of 500mA per USB port, so the provided cable has one USB connection to the computer and a "dummy" branch off of that cable to get the other 500mA off the second port (only the VCC and ground pins are hooked up, no data lines). Usually you don't need to do that though. Now that I've remembered all that... the second is probably what it is. Is it a Maxtor unit? It was from Wal-mart and thats what he purchsed. Gerry, its junk IMO, and I would just get a normal external hard drive. Unless this "OS" the drive is running is using the USB as a paired send and receive. Seen some Cisco gear that would take several varied connections, 56K, ISDN, Frac T and then combine them up to increase the overall speed. That could be an interesting item if they have some how bound two USB controllers together to increase the throughput to the system. I agree, want Manufacturer and Model Numbers, need to do some research. [MBZ] OT-Standalone hard drive
A major hard drive mfg is selling a standalone unit that supposedly works like an internal hard drive complete with its own OS. It requires two USB jacks and cords, it's fairly small and compact, has (160 gig capacity?), sells for about $150, and seems to be targetted at travelers. I noticed them at Walmart. Anyone tried them yet?
