It's just editorializing. Just be glad you didn't find a way

Hey Kevin

The Rabbit from 75 to 84 used several different alternators made by bosch,
motorola and valeo,
I think for the 78 you may only have a couple of choices depending on the
engine, if 1.5 or 1.6.  I think for most of them it just depends on the correct
pully length for belt alignment

Well, we've had our hands on the free '78 Rabbit for a whole week now. This
as the one that had been sitting for a couple years due to a bad
lternator. The alternator has been removed which, I believe, could be the
ource of our problem. We installed new battery cables, but nothing is
orking in the car, no accessories, lights, turn signals, nada. It will run
hen gas is put into the throttle body, but it can only be started by
umping the solenoid. I'm guessing that the alt completes the circuits, and
verything will work normally once the "CORRECT alternator is installed and
onnected. This is a problem since the original one isn't around to match
p to buy the correct one. These old, German cars just seem to call my
ame.

The hot wire for the dash buss is probably connected to the alternator
with the charging wire. On the Benz it's on the starter where the
battery cable goes, so you might check there, too -- they tend to slip
up inside the cover and don't get connected.

No alternator output will shut off the fuel pump it if has CIS
injection.

it's not the caps that matter. you left the s off europarts.

78 rabbit was maybe hte favorite car i ever owned. changed hte points and
plugs every 5k miles and never had the slightest hint of ignition trouble
despite the car having 280k miles. would still have it if a tree didn't
fall on it and kill it :(
