Asians in general, both Chinese and Japanese. Heck, remember their former
President, Fujimori? I got to attend this black tie reception thing with him
when I was there on business years ago. My buddy at work that covered South
America was Peruaño and donated or helped get medical equipment shipped into
the country from the Peruvian community in Milwaukee.

We used to travel down there together, and on one of our trips he told me to
pack formal wear but didn’t tell me why. There was this big reception with
Fujimori and a bunch of business leaders that we went to, and he got some sort
of award for the work he did for this medical group that received the donations
he coordinated.

It was pretty cool. I had to fill out a card with the phonetic pronunciation of
my name for the receiving line and I got my picture taken with him. I should
dig that out...

Spot on as far as Panama and diversity. If you don’t understand or know the
history it will mess with your mind. Why? Go into a very authentic Chinese
restaurant in Panama City and the employees all speak very fluent Spanish.
“What is wrong with this picture?” your brain will say.

With alcohol being banned by many of the indigenous towns there’s a thriving
business in smuggling. I once saw a bottle of Jack Daniels black change hands
for over $100, and this was 20 years ago.

They got to great lengths to stop the trafficking but the stuff still gets
through. Much like the Indian reservations of the lower 48, drug and alcohol
addiction are rampant. If we didn’t kill the indigenous people with weapons or
smallpox, we let alcohol do it...

They are running out of cash. Second year in a row the government will need to
reduce spending by $1.5B. Governor is raiding the constitutional savings
accounts of around $500mm, which will leave those pretty much depleted. The
state is a huge Socialist program, with oil money paying for just about
everything. Very much akin to Venezuela, but without socialist leadership.
Not much tax on residents that pays for schools, infrastructure, or much of
anything else. All out of the state coffers.

There is a big tax on visitors. Get on a cruise, and you are paying all manner
of fees to the state. Big taxes on oil and minerals as well. No tax on the
imported workers who earn very large pay cheque.

As for me. I expect SWMBA is going to file for my socialist payment this
spring. The last dividend was around $1500 last year. Not really worth it,
unless you are not earning any cash and need the funds for beer. Oh, there is
talk of putting a massive tax on booze. Given the price for a can of PBR up
there, it is almost as lucrative as smuggling meth.

Not at all!

I was very amazed to find the bulk of the population is not as ethnically
diverse as all the pundits try to make one think up there. I had pictured all
manner of natives and other folks of color having a much larger hold on
population. The news and chatter is all about natives and the asians, pacific
islanders and latinos. How Alaska is so Diverse! But it seems the reality is
that a bunch of the people who built up the pipeline and run the oil and mining
concerns are staying on and producing second and third generations.

The Panama Canal zone was far more diverse, even with fourth generation
families, as the construction crews were Caribbean and chinese, as well as the
few locals. The whites remained in charge, making that place a very Mayberry
atmosphere. Even with the many bases and proximity of locals. Alaska media
pushes a narrative that is not in keeping with the census figures.

I do see a bunch of diverse people driving import cars. 10 to one you find
asians in a Benz or Porsche. Maybe something else German. Find a pickem up
truck and the owner has a european background.
