Yup - our 220D had that rubber foot pump. The outlet connector broke and
soaked my foot one time. They still sold replacements at that time.

Re: [MBZ] OT - An Old Coupe

2023-04-28 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
Ah, vacuum wipers. My ‘62 Falcon had them as well.
We were driving up north in AZ, winter of ‘83 I think, following a mid ‘40s bus
of some sort that had been backyard converted to an RV. This monstrosity was
putting along up the mountain belching out oily smelling diesel fumes as it was
snowing/sleeting like mad. I was doing the crazy vacuum wiper dance where you
let up off the foot feed to get a couple of good, aggressive wipes in, then
mash on the foot feed to stay caught up.
Being familiar with the highway, I knew a chance to pass the bus was coming up.
I positioned myself and, seeing no oncoming vehicles, I downshifted to second
and spun up all 170 cu in and commenced passing with my wipers barely moving.
Half way around the RV it was time to shift to third. Letting up off the gas to
shift allowed the wipers to come to life revealing an elk starting to cross the
highway from my left.
I shouted several salty phrases as I braced for impact, but the only impact was
his massive snout wracking my side mirror.
Upon finishing overtaking the bus, I looked over at SWMBO and was glaring at me
giving me that look all you married guys know. She reached over, turned down
the tube AM radio, and informed me she is never riding in this car again.
After that trip she never did. The next week I bought my first manual 240D.

My 1960 Falcon has this system. They work well enough, but not when you floor
it for passing.
This car has a double-headed fuel pump. The same rubber diaphragm pumps fuel
on one side
and air on the other. (As a booster for manifold vacuum.) It is likely that
the booster stopped
working correctly. Probably a check valve stopped sealing correctly. If the
diaphragm had split
they'd have had worse problems.

Or maybe a hose came loose, or the drive cable from the knob (?) to the vacuum
motor came off?
The system is simple, and while it doesn't work particularly well it's
difficult to see how it would
fail to work at all, unless the cause were simple.

The very best supplement for this system is Rain-X.

I skimmed over the ad copy -- yeah a flat head Ford V8 will have all kinds of
options for parts and upgrades. No fears there.

I'd probably also convert the electrical system to 12V and put in an
alternator. That will save you a few HP and give you a lot of options for
radios, improved lights, etc. There is something to be said for keeping it all
original if it's a show car but if you're going to drive it there are practical
matters to consider.

I have a bit of a story about a car like that as well. A Realtor that I
knew had a car that looked a lot like that - even that colour. I don't
know if it was the same year as the one in the ad but it was certainly
very similar.
He and his wife went to a car show in Regina which is about 5 hours west
of Winnipeg. They started home and it started to rain. These old cars
had vacuum operated wipers and would slow down on hills etc. In this
case the wipers just quit working at all. They needed to get home so
they tied cord to the wipers and ran the cord back through the vent
windows. Bob drove and Myrna pulled the cords back and forth. They kept
the windshield clear enough to get home but by the time they got home,
they had worn the paint off of the A pillars where the cords had slid
back and forth.

I like it but I wouldn't really want to own it. There are many things
like that. I enjoy seeing them but I wouldn't really want to own them
unless I was wealthy enough to build a collection like Jay Leno. Another
example is a Corvette. I have always liked the way they look but they
are too impractical for the most part. I am happy with my 4 door pickup
truck for the most part and I have the old MB for a hobby car.
