Re: [MBZ] OT - Interior Painting

2019-10-19 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I've had good luck with those paint-in-handle rollers, there are several
brands, like Paint Stick.
https://www.amazon.com/HomeRight-PaintStick-EZ-Twist-C800952-M-Applicator/dp/B0102ZBALA
The long handle lets you reach high areas without a ladder. The handle (like a
big syringe) stores a lot of paint so you are not constantly going back to the
tray like a regular roller. The main downside is cleaning the roller (I was
too cheap to throw away a roller) but cleaning a sprayer is no joy either..

Yeah, we had a boatload of rain last night and now that it’s cleared the area
we’re getting a lot of wind, but the sun is out and it’s a beautiful day.

Had some swirly winds (tornadoes) around last night, but nothing close to us.
Your mom in law was a lot closer to the wind events out in Lakeland.

Graco is a quality tool... with a quality price. Can't touch one for less
than $400, and that is the low end one.
The Harbor Freight one is $160 on sale. I can own one, break it, buy
another one two times for what I pay for a Graco. Economy of scale says HF
wins..
If I were full time professional, Graco, and charge customers to pay for
it...
Otherwise..
Hire cheap help to do taping, buy HF unit... be done.

I watched crews paint with a 24" roller.   I do believe it would be
faster and far cheaper, and no overspray.   They had 2-4 people brushing
the trim, then they guy came in with the 24" roller and the room was
done.  No masking, except the steel door frames they had already painted

If I were gonna buy a sprayer, buy graco.   They have resale value.

Latest flyer from Harbor Freight here shows the sprayer for $160.00.
Rental here would cost that much for two days.
My money goes for the HF unit. Own it, use it when you want. Done deal.

Airless rigs are the cats meow, IMHO the new HF units have pressure
regulation, which is REALLY good.. you can turn down the spray and control
what you shoot much easier.
Clean up is easy with a pail of clean water and dish

Back when I had rentals, I had tried a powered roller and it sucked.
I ended up buying an 18" roller and accessories to paint whole interiors
with. It was a bit pricey, but painting with a double width roller, the job
goes very quickly, especially when there are no color changes. Painting
the ceilings will give you arms like Ah-nold though. An eighteen inch roller,
on an extension pole, fully loaded with paint is quite heavy.

You could always declare paint week, pick your colors, mask off the new house,
and shoot it in a day with a pro quality rental after all the prep is done.

Then get some pails of neutral paint and do the same with the old house after
you move out. How does two day's rent compare to a month's depreciation on the
HF unit?

The only downside is you have to mask off everything, cover floors, which takes

I primed and painted the popcorn ceiling, looked really good. Next morning I

I got one to paint a room with popcorn ceiling.  It works great, well
worth the price, seems like a good unit.  Get 5gal buckets of paint, put
the sprayer on a milk crate (tie it down) so the feed tube goes right
into the bucket, and have at it.  Get another 5gal bucket to do the
primer water and then cleaning.

The only downside is you have to mask off everything, cover floors,
which takes time, but you can spray a room in like 10min, so either way
takes close to the same amount of time.

I primed and painted the popcorn ceiling, looked really good. Next
morning I see a small area pulling off, pulled on it and like 40% of the
ceiling just zipped right off!  The rest pulled off just as easily!  So
back to the sprayer on bare sheetrock...

I’ve used bulk sprayers before, both inside and outside a house, and really
like the speed at which you can paint large areas. However, I’m not sure I want
to go “all in” on this, either, as I’ll have plenty of time to do the work.

Anyone have any experience with the HF unit? As this will be pretty much unused
after I’m done, I have to consider whether I want to drop serious coin and then
sell whatever I buy, or go on the cheep and hope all goes well and I get my
money out of it before it cacks.

I am sure it would be fine.  It has a lot of reviews on it and they
appear to be good.
