Funny, a Folk Art was the first thing that came to my mind as well! Nice piece! Sent from my iPhone On Dec 16, 2014, at 7:05 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Cool. I wish I had some of the stuff I made, or for that matter, a couple of my childhood toys. I do have a shoe box with some Matchbox cars that belonged to me as a child. I had Matchboxs and Corgis, but since the Corgis were far more expensive (I bought them with my allowance) I never played with them outside. That Matchboxs got played with outside…. I kept the 100 or so Corgis I had until the late 1980s, when I sold them to make the down payment on our house. A nice investment, even if I hadn’t intended for them to be used for something like that. Done. Thanks for the heads up. Just reminder to all, if you get a hold notice from the list please drop me a note so I know it's there and can approve it. I generally check the queue twice a day, but if I get caught up with something I can (and do!) forget sometimes. [MBZ] OT - Model car
We'd love to see it. As I've said before, I never had any store-bought toys, except a very small and flimsy tricycle and a small wagon of equally poor quality at Christmas in 1940, when I was six. The tricycle and the wagon were way too small for me and were broken and unusable less than an hour after I took them outside. 'Ran over a piece of pine bark with front wheel of the trike and broke the fork. I carved many cars and boats from scraps of pine and thick pieces of pine bark. 'Always borrowed Daddy's pocket knife for the carving - he was always afraid I'd cut myself or lose his knife. 'Built several boats powered by paddle wheels and rubber bands made from strips of discarded tire inner-tubes. 'Also made little tractors from sewing thread spools, a stick, an old piece of crayon (wax) and a thin strip of inner-tube rubber. 'Made many kites of newspaper and dried dog fennel sticks with strips of rags for tail and cotton tobacco twine, string normally used to attach tobacco onto sticks to facilitate hanging them in the curing/drying barns. Lash the two pieces of dog fennel together with string; run string around perimeter of the crossed sticks; attach the paper to the cross by folding edges of the paper over the perimeter string and glue the folded paper edges onto the main body of paper with flour-and-water glue. 'Made several baseballs by winding tobacco twine tightly around a center core of a found jack rock ball and covered with black cloth electrical tape (long before plastic tape) or white adhesive tape. BTW, a rock was too hard for the center core. 'Made/carved bats of hickory or other hardwood as available. 'Carved a yo-yo at least once. 'Made several bows using whatever thin hardwood branches available at the time. Dried dog fennels made satisfactory arrows, but were a bit light. 'Made many bean shooters using a forked piece of hardwood, two pieces of inner-tube rubber and a small piece of old shoe leather. Acorns, greed China berries and small, round rocks made adequate ammo. 'Never had a marble, except two or three found somewhere. 'Never had/owned a comic book; never had a box of crayons nor a coloring book. 'Never had a cap gun/pistol nor an air rifle. 'Made many other toys and tools I can't remember right now. Though I never had store-bought toys, my supply of toys and tools was limited by only my imagination, ingenuity and ability to create or build whatever was appropriate at the time. I don't recall how old he was at the time but he had a collection of them. He lived in southern Ontario as a child and watched the ships go by from the shore. He carved copies of some that he saw. In his later years, he passed along these little ship models to the grand children. I was one of the younger boys and did not see him as often as some who lived closer to him and as such, I got one of the little ones. Some were much bigger. The one I got was only a couple of inches long. Some were more like 6 inches long and much more elaborate if my memory is accurate. My grand father passed away in the mid 1960's and was 85 years old or thereabouts when he died. I am guessing that these little ships were carved sometime in the 1880's or 1890's. I still have the one that I got, which is something of a miracle as I recall playing with it as a child. I will take a photo of it and post it. Ruler added to illustrate size - about 7 or 8 cm = about 3 inches long. Wood is fairly soft - not heavy. Maybe pine? Stained brown - bottom is lighter as I wore the stain off sliding it around on the floors when I was a fair bit younger than I am now. BTW, I assume, that if you look at the photos on photobucket of the little ship model, you can see the rest of my album by clicking the arrows left and right. Feel free to do so. Some of the photos may make sense based on things I have posted on before - like my old MB. Some won't and some are just photos I grabbed from somewhere else and know little about. But, if you see anything interesting and wish to know more, I will do my best to respond and tell you about it. RB On 17/12/2014 2:20 PM, WILTON wrote: Yep, a great piece; likely pine. [MBZ] OT - Model car
Attached are several photos of a model car that I carved at 15 in 1949 using a small block of balsa wood that a friend gave me. It appears that the '50 Studebaker and the '49/'50 Hudson may have had some influence. Most significant to me, though, are the curved, one-piece windshield and rear window and the rectangular headlights streamlined into the fenders. Tail lights were basically the same design as the headlights. The hood ornaments were to be radio antennae. Part of the rear, underside has been lost sometime during the last 65 years. I kept the 100 or so Corgis I had until the late 1980s, when I sold them to make the down payment on our house. A nice investment, even if I hadn’t intended for them to be used for something like that. Wilton, I would like to commission you to carve my likeness in balsa wood, or rosewood if you prefer... That’s worth a small fortune, Wilton - it’s “folk art”! Time to head for the Antiques Roadshow guys…… All kidding aside, it’s amazing to me that someone would have something like this from their childhood, unless it was held by a parent who passed it down later in life. Re: [MBZ] OT Model car pR0n
Hi Rich - Very coool stuff! years ago there was a article in RT about a guy who used to come into a hobby story with the most realistic models the owner had ever seen. Little keys in the ignition -- turn the little key and the car started , shift it into gear and the car took off. There were oil stains in all the right places - just like on a real car. The guy would come in and sell his model for a few hundred and be gone for weeks or months. But the cars he would bring in were strange cars to model.Cars like a 61 Dodge Dart, a 59 VW - real cars like real people drove. The store owner tried to get him to bring in more popular cars but the guy didn't listen. This goes on for a while until the reader realizes the models are real cars that have been shrunk down in size - not modeled at all. Anyway - I thought it was a excellent article. I have it in a collection of RT artwork and stories. I'll have to re-read it.
