My Cessna is worth 67% more now than it was pre-Covid. I need to get the
experimentals flying before the market crashes so I can cash out the
Cessna. Of course, the cost of materials for the experiments is increasing
as well.

You would think buying a jet makes you less rich, but that has not been
true for the last 20 years or so. You buy and the plane goes up in price,
so you sell and use the profit to leverage the purchase of a larger
aircraft, which then appreciates and generates even more equity. Seems
weird, but covid drove demand quite a lot and some of these things nearly
doubled in value. Add 8% inflation to that and moving your dollars into
durable capital equipment starts to look pretty smart.

Far from making their owners less rich, it is another case of the rich
getting even richer. That is what I mean by a glimpse into another world.
The world where people with a lot of money compete with each other for big
ticket capital equipment items. Because they all got a lot richer through
gains in the financial world during covid, so the price of a jet just keeps
climbing.Maybe they will come down again at some point, but it isnt
happening yet.

A lot of them aren’t buying jets necessarily, they’re just chartering far more.
The leasing services that let you buy “shares” in a plane or fleet have also
increased significantly over the past few years as well.

Those subscription charter services are doing big business. The number of
private jets flying into our little local airport bringing the swells to the
resort lifestyle gated beach community on a weekend is most interesting to see.
The other day I saw a G5 or 6, it was big, getting ready to take off. Judging
by the windows it could probably haul 30-40 people easily.

There are those who also own them, might be a bunch of them here, or corporate
jets they use. A few years ago I started a little cycling group, we had a core
group but various people would join and drop over time. One ride there was this
young couple in front of me talking to each other about taking a trip to
Ethiopia. They apparently had thought about it but had decided right then to
do it. The woman says well I’ll call and tell them to get the jet ready for
next week then. Ok…

Yeah you get to peel back the curtain a bit on the layers of the economy
when you start paying attention to private jet traffic. All that stuff
people say about the rich getting richer during covid is 100% true. Prices
of private jets are out of sight. If people have the means to fly private
they do, and there are a lot of people with the means.

After they fell out of favor for passenger service, the DC-10 and MD-11

This ADSB receiver I got the boy is a major time suck. While we’ve still got to
get a better antenna setup going, it still pulls in a lot of traffic overhead.

I’ve seen three FedEx planes on their way to Honolulu this afternoon, one of
them an MD-11. Another FedEx MD-11 going from MEM to LAX right behind the other.

It’s also interesting how many private jets there are who don’t report their
registrations publicly.
