Shirley did not get chicken pox when she was a child. She asked to get a chicken pox shot when we were in Austin. Our doctor was very leery of giving her one if she had had chicken pox and did not remember, so he had her tested for chicken pox immunity (titer). When the result came back as zero, he was surprised, but gave her the shot. The internist did not mention this one having a shelf life, but the previous option was less effective and did require a booster. Re: [MBZ] OT - Shingles Vaccine
Shingrex is the vaccine of choice according to my internist. I’m not sure if they even offer the “old” vaccine. Randy, while our insurance system is flawed, nearly all insurers cover preventative care 100%, such as immunizations and annual physicals. There can be limits, as there once was for the former shingles vaccine, requiring the patient to be 60 years or older to receive the vaccine for free. With Shingrex they’ve now lowered the age to 50. I left work around 1:30 today and went to bed until about 7:00. I’m feeling better now, but the side effects were still rough although shorter this time. -D > On Feb 4, 2020, at 5:17 PM, Dwight Giles via Mercedes > wrote: > > I think the Shingrx is rated 80% effective while the previous one was,50%. > Shingles can be very nasty esp the long term lingering nerve pain.. > > Dwight Giles Jr. > Wickford RI > > On Tue, Feb 4, 2020, 3:53 PM Randy Bennell via Mercedes < > mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > >> Did you talk to the Dr about the effectiveness of this vaccine? Re: [MBZ] OT - Shingles Vaccine
In my case there was no callback, it was incumbent upon me to schedule the second time. But I got mine at Walgreen’s as my internist has had a hard time keeping it in stock. The bulk of the practice is and has been geriatric patients for some years, so they do a lot of immunizations. They have “flu shot carnival” (my description) every fall where they immunize over 2500 patients in about 4-5 hours. It’s a real assembly line operation that is finely tuned, for sure. -D > On Feb 3, 2020, at 8:04 PM, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: > > I've only had the first shot - they haven't called my back for the second > one yet. I've only had the first shot - they haven't called my back for the second one yet. I had almost no issues with the first one. [MBZ] OT - Shingles Vaccine
Got my follow up shot this afternoon. I’m “windmilling” the snot out of that arm as often as I can. Might not alleviate the side effects much, but it will be interesting to see how much my upper arm hurts tomorrow. Pharmacist said the flu-like side effects don’t appear to be consistent among patients from what she’s heard from people she’s given the vaccine to. She said some get the first dose and not the second, vice versa or not at all. The dose is identical for both shots, so it’s not like the dosage varies. She said she thinks it might be a function of the person’s current condition relative to their immune system. Whatever. I just hope I don’t feel like dooky tomorrow like I did the last time... -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
