We'll see . . . .

[MBZ] OT - VW woes ---

2014-06-11 Thread OK Don
I took the Passat in for it's two year check-up, free oil change, and a
re-call for the head light connector yesterday.
While they were mucking about in the engine compartment, they managed to
break something somehow, but don't yet know what they did. The check engine
light stays one, and relay near the engine is buzzing constantly. They gave
up trying to figure it out themselves and called VW tech support today, and
were told that they had fried the main engine computer and need to replace
it.
The parts man reports that there are no new main engine computers in the US
nor in Germany at this time. They are continuing to search for one however.

I told them that since the car is assembled in Tennessee, that there are
indeed new parts in the US - get one. Then is occurred to me that they have
new TDIs on the lot - if the part number is the same for the 2012 and the
2014, they can just pull one and let their car sit waiting for a new part!

Dr. Fatty, can you look up part numbers for a 2012 VW Passat TDI SE, the
main engine computer, and the same part for a 2014???

This sounds exactly like the issues my brother had when he had an early 2000s
Passat. Apparently they were known to have window regulators fail, which would
cause the window to drop down and he only way to keep it in place was with
rubber wedges.

He had several replaced, and every time it happened there wasn't a regulator to
be had in the US and often not even in Germany. I know at least one time he
had to wait almost two months before they got one.

Thank goodness for MB and their wonderful parts distribution system!

Re: [MBZ] OT - VW woes ---

2014-06-11 Thread arche...@embarqmail.com
That seems to be a common problem with several imports. Widowed
neighbor lady asked me to look at her Volvo. I bought a book on the car
and soon diagnosed the problem for which several parts were needed.
There were none in the U.S., so we waited for them to be shipped from
Sweden, and we waited and waited and waited.
Finally the lady asked me to recommend a reliable car for which parts
were obtainable in the U.S. I suggested a Camry. She bought one and
has been happy ever since.
(Mercedes content: After seeing me continually working on my MBs she
did not want a Mercedes.)
