Speaking of which, what does everyone use for temporary storage of not so little parts like bolts and such that you pull off of engines during a repair? I haven't seen a (metal) #10 coffee can in years. Likewise, metal coffee cans are a thing of the past... They were great for washing out bearings and such. For larger parts, I take a gallon can (like from paint thinner, etc), cut most of a side out and then fold the edges under to make it halfway safe. -- John W Reames jream...@verizon.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Aug 11, 2014, at 12:42, Craig via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: On Mon, 11 Aug 2014 12:09:55 -0400 Rich Thomas via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Get a bunch of those little baggies like the dope dealers use --R On 8/11/14 11:30 AM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: I believe that Lee Valley has small stainless steel canisters. Re: [MBZ] OT - storing small parts
I'm pretty sure we can still get large metal coffee cans at Walmart - I have a couple iin my garage. But for storing small parts I prefer using Tupperware type of plastic containers as I dislike rummaging through 10# coffee cans full of misc stuff.. They have snap-on lids and are transparent enough to see the things stored inside. I get them on sale at ~$5 for 3 - 1 quart sized containers. Costco has them at times... They also last a long time. When disassembling an engine I put the parts inside zip-lock storage bags which are labelled to make re-assy easier. I did this when I did a full restore on my '66 MGB it was a good thing I did that as the restore lasted much longer than I thought due mostly to my health which put me out of action for long periods.Without those storage bags and their labels I'd still be looking at fasteners wondering where they went... or else there'd be a pile of fasteners left over... ;-) LarryT On 8/11/2014 2:24 PM, John Reames -- Mercedes wrote: Speaking of which, what does everyone use for temporary storage of not so little parts like bolts and such that you pull off of engines during a repair? The supply seemed endless, even though I well knew it wasn't. Nevertheless, while the cardboard box is not quite empty yet, it will be soon... And then - when the last 35mm film canister is gone - what will I use to store small parts? I never had very many of the metal ones, but those are quite nice. The plastic ones - both Kodak style and Fuji style - are keeping many dozens of things safe and organized around here. All those years of saving all my canisters. Think of all those rolls of film, and all those photos! Well, except for bulk loaded rolls. And somehow I have used them. I even have a couple salt/pepper shaker tops for the Kodak canisters. I have been on the lookout for a replacement, but I haven't stumbled onto anything yet. Soon it could be a crisis. My dad and grandfather used something like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/40-bin-organizer-with-full-length-drawer-94375.html Then there's these: http://www.harborfreight.com/24-compartment-large-storage-container-61881.html For replacing film cannisters, there's always prescription pill tubes. If you're not a drug user, talk to some older friends, you have to know somebody who goes through five or more a month. One thing HF had 20 years ago but I can't find now were a couple dozen little aluminum round containers with clear inserts in the lids, all in a tiny steel box about 4x8. Now those were ideal for stuff like carb float needles. If they still have them, they aren't on the web site categorized under storage. Like Mitch, I use various sizes of small prescription bottles for very small parts. For larger parts I use heavy duty snack, sandwich, pint, quart, gallon, and 2 gallon plastic press and seal bags, but never the kind with a slider since the slider usually fails fairly soon. These bags are stored in double grocery bags, the height of which is cut to fit the shelf they will go on. All the plastic bags are labeled with a Sharpie or paper press-on labels unless they are common parts visible through the transparent bags; primary fuel filters, for example. The plastic bag system works very well for dirty greasy used parts I want to save but don't want to bother cleaning before storage. Carefully put in a plastic bag, they can be stored anywhere without getting other items dirty and greasy. Exactly! I still have a few of the 100' metal cans that I use for cleaning small parts, or for temporary storage of nuts, bolts and washers while repairing something. I am also about to run out of the clear lidded plastic boxes that some of the processors return slides in. I now am using a couple of these, and need to get another one - http://www.harborfreight.com/40-bin-organizer-with-full-length-drawer-94375.html - for all the aircraft fasteners.
