Change the fluid before changing the pump. If the fluid is gray, you will need to change pump and flush the steering box though. Good point. The fliud looks good, and doesn't smell burnt, but I'll change it anyway. I wonder if it has a filter -- might have to find a book, there must be a trip to the library in my future. I wondered if it was normal for a Ford - or non MB vehicle. FWIW my 95 Mazda B2300 (Ford Ranger) has always had a whiny PS pump. Since the original factory unit has less than 50K miles on it, I'd be wary of one from a bone yard.
