It is my understanding that bus/motorcoach could not be registered in California because it uses the Detroit 8V71 two stroke diesel engine and can NOT be made to pass strict California emissions.. Thus, California would refuse to title or register and license it. Just for further consideration.. I figured that was the case, in that a private operator was not required to have a CDL. Too bad. I mentioned the requirements as my oldest son has a CDL that he got several years ago on his own, which, if he had been in AZ, wouldn’t have been possible. My understanding is that a bus converted and registered as an "RV" does not need a CDL to drive. It also doesn't need to pass annual DOT inspections, which is where the problems come in. Owners often don't maintain them like they should, and that's how expensive problems start. Even if they try, it's hard for them to find competent mechanics to work on them. Most of the people who know how to work on buses work for bus operators.
