I think these might be environmentally friendly detergents. It's been
a while since I heard the discussion amonst performance bike riders,
but it was a major issue. The M1 15w50 was deemed to not pose a threat
and was also the best in the biz.

I'm pretty sure that just about any motor oil intended for use
in a filtered environment has detergents in it. They suspend
the dirt so the oil can carry it to the filter. W/O the
detergent additives, the dirt would just form a slurry on
 the bottom of the sump.

For some strange reason, Mobil 1 is -not- recommended for my new bike,
a 1999 Honda CBR1100XX. The other owners are kind of pissed off about
it because they'd like to use synthetic, but they're warned against
it, especially when most of the other modern Honda bikes do good on
it. Any clue as to why this might be?

Have you used the 15w50 since it got the new packaging? I was thinking

  I probably don't need synthetic.

There are advantages to synthetic other than extended change interval!
Cold start wear is reduce 50-80%, the engine cranks 25-40% faster and I
have found that timing chain wear rate in Mercedes diesels is halved
with Mobil 1. The stuff just lubricates BETTER!

I've had excellent luck running Mobil 1 15-W-50 in my CB-500K (wet clutch).
No slipping at all.

I use 5w40 in everything 'cept the bikes. Motorcycles with wet clutches
 need
15w-50. It has no friction modifiers.

Was it a synthetic prohibition, or Mobil 1 prohibition?
I know guys who would be upset if they couldn't use
Spectro Golden Synthetic motorcycle oil.

Forward it ASAP to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've received suspect emails like these and FWded them along to ebay at the
above address. The spoof dept. usually responds, probably an automated
response, but at least they care enough to reply.
