IIRC, and that’s a dangerous thing as this was 40+ years ago, but on the 3.8 
and 4.2 OHC inline sixes Jag had, after you measured valve clearances and 
determined that adjustments were called for, you removed the timing chain, both 
timing (cam) gears, and then the cams (one at a time.)

Then you removed the tappets and followers, took the little spacers/disks out 
of the tappets, miked them and recorded the thickness. Then you took the 
clearance you measured, subtracted the specified clearance from the total of 
the measured amount and the disk thickness, and that told you how many more 
thousandths you needed to get back to spec. Then you got your tray of disks and 
found a thicker one that took up the slack/difference.

Do that for each valve, rinse, repeat for the other cam.

As I recall it was an 8 or 10 hour flat rate job. You could do it pretty 
quickly, relatively speaking, once you got the hang of it. I can recall doing a 
3.8 in a day or less.

Inverted bucket cam followers?

Saab had those on their first inline 4 (same engine would later end up 
in the TR7).
Except they were kind enough to put a bracket on the block that lined up 
with the cam and put a threaded hole in the center of the sprocket.
You took one cam sprocket bolt out, used it to bolt the sprocket to the 
bracket, then took the other two bolts out, unbolted the cam bearings 
and lifted the cam off the buckets. Then lift out buckets and swap out 
shims to adjust.

Put it all together and measure clearances again.

I don’t recall ever doing valve adjustments on a V12. I did them on the inline 
6s, though. Very time consuming if you had to make adjustments. You have to 
pull the timing chain, cam sprockets and cams.

The older models, (XJ140, XKE, etc.) were fairly easy to service, as raising 
the bonnet pretty much exposed the whole engine and front frame. You just had 
to be careful not to bang your head on the XKE bonnet. XKE bonnets were very 
heavy and not well balanced as far as the pivot point for opening them.

I loved working on XKEs, it was like working on a vintage domestic car where 
you could almost sit in the engine compartment. Except for the front of the 
engine, that was one area that was tight.

If you want tight, try working on an XJ12. Much like this car, there was barely 
enough room to extend your fingers into the gap between the side of the engine 
and the inner fender. G-d forbid you have to work on the front of the engine, 
like a water pump. That involved practically removing the front clip.

and been repaired. The bonnet was HEAVY - we figured there must have been 5
