[MBZ] Odd rear diff cover?
Was replacing Brunnhilde's axles and noticed that the diff cover does not match exactly the diff housing -- there are 2 bolt holes in the housing that the cover does not have, and the cover sorta misses those areas a bit. Would this be as intended, or might Brunnhilde have an odd diff cover? --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I feel much better now, but now I wonder why the Benz engineers would allow such a thing to leave the factory with such an obvious mismatch? Ist not ordnung! --R Jim Cathey wrote: Was replacing Brunnhilde's axles and noticed that the diff cover does not match exactly the diff housing -- there are 2 bolt holes in the housing that the cover does not have, and the cover sorta misses those areas a bit. Re: [MBZ] Odd rear diff cover?
It's not a mis-match, it's designed that way. The differential is tied to the driveline. The rear cover is also the differential mount, which is tied to the body. You can have several differential / cover match-ups. Re: [MBZ] Odd rear diff cover?
I understand those aspects, but it is still curious to me why the diff cover and diff housing are different profiles. Perhaps the diff is a universal design and the covers/mounts are the variable part, or maybe the other way around. --R Tom Hargrave wrote: It's not a mis-match, it's designed that way.
