[MBZ] Odd rear diff cover?

2007-09-25 Thread Rich Thomas
Was replacing Brunnhilde's axles and noticed that the diff cover does
not match exactly the diff housing -- there are 2 bolt holes in the
housing that the cover does not have, and the cover sorta misses those
areas a bit. Would this be as intended, or might Brunnhilde have an odd
diff cover?

I feel much better now, but now I wonder why the Benz engineers would
allow such a thing to leave the factory with such an obvious mismatch?
Ist not ordnung!

It's not a mis-match, it's designed that way. The differential is tied
to the driveline. The rear cover is also the differential mount, which
is tied to the body. You can have several differential / cover
match-ups.

I understand those aspects, but it is still curious to me why the diff
cover and diff housing are different profiles. Perhaps the diff is a
universal design and the covers/mounts are the variable part, or maybe
the other way around.
